JIM CLICK BOUGHT THE TUSD SCHOOL BOARD ELECTION, ONE LESS BROWN PERSON ON THE BOARD // JIM CLICK COMPRÓ LAS ELECCIONES DE LA MESA DIRECTIVA DE TUSD, UNA PERSONA DE COLOR MENOS EN LA MESA

I’ve been reflecting about the local elections a lot lately, especially the TUSD school board election. It is truly disgusting that Jim Click and his buddies bought the election for Mark Stegeman and people like him who do not have the best interest of our children in mind.

Jim Click is a known philanthropist, donating to charities and education. But really, is it a cover so he looks good while putting people in positions of power to pass policy that really hurts brown and black communities? It sure seems that way.

Jim Click is a member of the Southern Arizona Leadership Council and as I remember it, John Pedicone was their pick for superintendent of TUSD in 2010. With the help of Stegeman on the board they ensured that he got voted in. His opponents were 3 candidates (Kenneth Baca, Lupita Cavazos-Garcia and Edith Macklin Isquierdo) who I feel would have better represented the students of color in TUSD and who also supported the highly successful Mexican-American Studies program that was later dismantled by Pedicone. Stegeman was part of the board majority at the time and was openly opposed to MAS.

Together they were able to close a bunch of schools and get rid of MAS, a program which was helping brown students raise their test scores, graduate from high school and go to college.

It was an exhausting struggle that ultimately brought our community together to fight for our students. In the end, the community voted to change the board majority and elected people to the school board that better represented TUSD (Cam Juarez and Kristel Foster).

TUSD is over 70% Latino and around 80% minority, but starting January the board will only have one Latin@ board member.

That just doesn’t make sense to me. How is it that a district that is nearly 80% minority is represented by a board that is only 20% minority?

I hate making things about race but in the current state that our country is in race cannot be ignored.

I was talking with a TUSD administrator recently about our current Superintendent H.T. Sanchez. This person said that they do not understand how so many people hate Dr. Sanchez. Though they may not always agree, this administrator felt that Dr. Sanchez was very competent, open minded and had the best interest of our students and community in mind. This seemed to be a common thread when talking to people that know him and have worked with/for him. Parents, community members, teachers and administrators I’ve talked to about Dr. Sanchez and his work over the past 4 years have all shared similar experiences.

One suggestion was that certain people haven’t really taken the time to get to know him and are being misinformed by mainstream media, but I feel it is much deeper than that. Could it be because he’s a proud brown Tejano who stands tall for our students and genuinely wants to improve the quality of education for ALL students across the district? Could it also be because he is bringing up brown bureaucrats into positions of power?

This fact cannot be ignored, especially when you connect the dots and look at the bigger picture and at what is happening in America today.

How is it that Trump got elected?

Is it not due in part to the fact that the white men in power, who embody the ideologies and beliefs that this racist system was founded on, are no longer the majority and are losing their power?

Jimmy Lovelace was the chair of TUSD’s Audit Committee under Pedicone and was forced off by Dr. Sanchez and the board majority when they added a residency requirement.

Lovelace is also the chair of ‘TUSD Kids First’ which was an independent campaign against Cam Juarez and Kristel Foster. It  was bought and paid for in large part by Jim Click and Jimmy Lovelace. There was more than $35,000 put into this effort. It ensured Cam Juarez didn’t get re-elected and it is the first step in getting rid of Sanchez and putting the power back into the hands of those working to maintain the status quo.

Jim Click is a member of the Southern Arizona Leadership Council and as I remember it, John Pedicone was their pick for superintendent of TUSD [what year did this happen].

  1. Thank you, Cesar for spending the time to say what needs to be said. Thank you, Casa Maria for supporting public education in Tucson👊🏼

Casa Maria, Cesar, Bryan (now NONE of you have kids there!) I certainly hope that your long term strategy of demagnetizing a school that once had a really exciting (and funded) program works. Now you will never have to make sure that white kids sit next to brown kids at Ochoa. Congratulations, and I really do hope that this hugely benefits the neighborhood kids that go there, and that more and more of them get to learn through the Reggio Method.

You and Flagg are fools. You have believed Sanchez and have been manipulated by him. That is on you. But in the process you have hurt hundreds of brown kids. When Sanchez talks to his rich white friends and politicians, he tells them how white European he is. The single time that he has used the term Chicano in reference to himself has been in front of an Ochoa audience. You and Flagg have been chumped and you need to stop your bro-mance with Sanchez. Cam Juarez lost because he is incompetent. I am brown and proud and I could not stand to vote for him like I did the first time. He let me down and he let my community down. Why don’t you mention in your blog that he took a $5000 dollar contribution by a contractor in Phoenix who had received a contract for $21,000,000 or more. He promised to return the bribe but never bothered to follow through on his word. He was never prepared for Board meetings and voted exactly as he was told by Sanchez.
