Letter to the Editor, National Catholic Reporter, July 15-28, 2016

Michael Sean Winters’ article celebrating the one year anniversary of Laudato Si’ (NCRonline.org/node/125486) concluded with an appeal for parishes to start picking the low hanging fruit of improving the carbon footprint of their facilities. I would also encourage parishes to engage right now with leading national and local climate action organizations to strike out at the huge social injustice impact of climate change that is impacting peoples around the world. The climate movement is a social justice movement, and communities of faith are called to fully engage and to lead in this struggle against the greed and indifference of the fossil fuel industry. There is not enough time left on the global warming clock to take a crawl-walk-run approach.

I couldn’t agree more with the letter writer. The Laudato Si discussions I attended in Tucson lacked urgency and had the same mediocre tone as to how to put the encyclical into action.

On the contrary, the text of the document is the Holy Father on fire, urging the faithful to undergo no less than an ‘ecological conversion.’ He speaks of an urgent need to create policies to drastically reduce the emissions of carbon dioxide an other highly polluting gases and proclaims that “because the stakes are so high, we need institutions empowered to impose penalties for damage inflicted on the environment” (#214).

So how to make this huge global problem local?

The bus! And its connection to climate change and the environment.

“The quality of life in cities has much to do with systems of transport, which are often a source of much suffering for those who use them. Many cars, used by one or more people, circulate in cities, causing traffic congestion, raising the level of pollution, and consuming enormous quantities of non-renewable energy. This makes it necessary to build more roads and parking areas which spoil the urban landscape. Many specialists agree on the need to give priority to public transportation. Yet some measures needed will not prove easily acceptable to society unless substantial improvements are made in the systems themselves, which in many cities force people to put up with undignified conditions due to crowding, inconvenience, infrequent service, and lack of safety.”

He is bluntly saying that cities need to substantially improve their bus systems to fight pollution and to provide dignity for the large part of the world’s population who depend on the bus to survive.

Members of the Bus Rider Union and Casa Maria take the Holy Father seriously.

Thus we are going to try to bring together different parts of the Tucson community, including our Roman Catholic Church, for a CLIMATE CHANGE/DON’T RAISE BUS FARES SUMMIT on Thursday, August 25 at 5:30 at Armory Park.

UN AÑO DESPUES

El artículo de Michael Sean Winters celebra un año de aniversario de Laudato Si (NCRoline.org/node/125486) concluyo con una apelación a las parroquias para empezar a recolectar la fruta madura para mejorar los residuos del carbono en sus instalaciones.

También animo a las parroquias a involucrarse con organizaciones encargadas del clima local y nacional para hacer conciencia de la injusticia social que impacta el cambio del clima que está impactando a la gente alrededor del mundo. La acción del clima es un movimiento de justicia, y las comunidades de fe son llamadas a involucrarse y a guiar la lucha contra la codicia e indiferencia de las industrias de combustible.

No hay tiempo suficiente en el calentamiento global para enfocarnos por pasos, hay que apurarnos.

No podría estar más de acuerdo con la carta del escritor. La discusión que participe aquí en Tucson acerca de Laudato Sí carecía de urgencia y tenía el mismo tono mediocre de cómo poner a la encíclica en acción.

Al contrario del texto en el documento del Santo Padre muy emocionado, usando la fe para someterse a la conversión ecológica. El hablo de la urgente necesidad de crear pólizas para reducir drásticamente el dióxido de carbono y otros gases altamente contaminantes y proclamo que “dado a que esta mucho en juego, necesitamos instituciones dotadas de poder para sancionar los ataques al medio ambiente.” #214

¿Así que como hacemos este problema global, local?

¡El Camión! Y su conexión con el cambio de clima y el medio ambiente.

“La calidad de vida en las ciudades tiene mucho que ver con el sistema de transporte, que a menudo es un recurso de mucho sufrimiento para aquellos que lo usan. Muchos carros, usados por una o más personas, circulan en las ciudades, causando mucho congestionamiento de tráfico, causando un nivel muy alto de contaminación, y consumiendo enormes cantidades de energía no renovable. Y se vuelve necesaria la construcción de más autopistas y lugares de estacionamiento que perjudican la trama urbana. Muchos especialistas coinciden en dar prioridad al trasporte público. pero algunas medidas necesarias no serán pacíficamente aceptadas por la sociedad sin una mejora sustancial en ese transporte, que en muchas ciudades significa un trato indigno a las personas debido a la sobrepoblación, baja frecuencia en el servicio y la inseguridad.” #153

Humildemente Él está diciendo que las ciudades necesitan mejorar el sistema de transporte público para combatir la contaminación, y para proveer dignidad a la mayor parte de la población en el mundo que depende de los camiones para sobrevivir.

Los Miembros de la Unión de los Pasajeros del Camión y Casa María toman muy en serio las palabras del Santo Padre.

Así que vamos a tratar de juntar las diferentes partes de la comunidad de Tucson, incluyendo a la Iglesia Católica Romana, para un CAMBIO DE CLIMA/NO AUMENTEN LAS TARIFAS DEL CAMION el jueves, 25 de Agosto a las 5:30 en el parque Armory.

RESERVA EL DIA!

On Sunday evening I looked through the Star only to find Columnist Tim Steller using his position and influence to, in effect, campaign against the TUSD board majority.

The article titled “TUSD broke promises with Prop. 123 spending” really has nothing to do with the management of funds in the  district, but has everything to do with the upcoming elections.

The entire purpose of this article can be found in these two sentences.

Foster, by the way, is up for re-election, along with fellow board member Cam Juarez. If either of them should lose, the board’s voting majority would change and the superintendent might well be replaced.

Why is it that the Arizona Daily Star and Tim Steller are so biased and objective when it comes to TUSD and the Board majority? Why do they fail to highlight any of the positive work being done in TUSD today? Why are they against teachers, workers, and families (especially those of color and living in poverty)? It seems they are doing everything in their power to influence the upcoming elections and cast a shadow over the great strides TUSD is making.

This reminds me of the front page story last week by the Star’s Education Reporter Alexis Hicochea titled “Tucson Unified going slow on teacher raises despite Prop. 123”. They put a negative spin on the situation with this headline while leaving out important facts that help the reader understand the bigger picture.

Tucson Weekly Columnist David Safier wrote a very balanced and accurate article pointing out this very fact and the fact that the story with a bold headline really isn’t a story at all.

My conclusion is, the Star article was reasonably accurate factually but incomplete. Because it left out TUSD’s May 10 teacher raise, its conclusion that TUSD reneged on its pledge to its teachers is inaccurate. If the writer had looked at the comparison of pay raises at TUSD and other districts more carefully, there would have been no story to report, let alone a front page story critical of TUSD.

Just like his colleague Alexis, Steller does a good job at pointing out certain facts in his column, but does an even better job of leaving out the facts that help you understand the bigger picture.

Steller’s work is either extremely lazy and incompetent or it is intentionally written in this context.

I was also surprised to see that Steller quoted Hicks saying, “That money should be going to teachers,” Hicks said. “It was sold as money for teachers. That was my beef with it.” but fails to mention that both Hicks and Stegeman have repeatedly voted against teacher and staff pay raises in the past, that is, until this year when they voted unanimously with the  board majority. Could this election year have anything to do with that?

Since H.T. Sanchez has been Superintendent the teachers have seen multiple increases in base salaries and a reduction in class size, just like he promised us at the  John Valenzuela Youth Center in front of 200 people in his first month as Superintendent.

Before Sanchez, the only pay raise teachers saw was when former Superintendent John Pedicone raised base salaries while making teachers pay for insurance, which offset the salary increase.

I recently spoke to a TUSD teacher with 20 years in the district that said before Sanchez she couldn’t remember the last time she had a significant base salary increase.

The way this article was written implies that the majority board is harming the district and lying to the public about the way funds are being managed. But if you look at the history and the way the board has voted in the past, it’s easy to see who really supports teachers, staff, students, and families in the district. It is evident that the previous board majority did not support public schools and the working families that depend on them.

I’m sorry Steller, but I prefer having a board majority that works to improve our schools. I support Sanchez and the current board majority because I refuse to allow the power to go back into the hands of people like Mark Stegeman (who had the board majority before Cam Juarez and Kristel Foster were elected). I feel that the old board majority did not support public schools because they consistently voted to close schools, cut funding, and voted against salary increases for teachers and workers.

ARIZONA DAILY STAR: ¿NOTICIAS O PROPAGANDA?

El Domingo en la tarde miré el periódico Star y solo encontré al columnista Tim Steller usando su posición e influencia en la Campaña contra el consejo de TUSD. El artículo titulado “TUSD rompió la promesa con el gasto prop. 123” que realmente no tiene nada que ver con los fondos en el distrito. Pero si tiene que ver con las futuras elecciones.

     Fosters, por cierto, está listo para la reelección, junto con el miembro de la junta Cam Juárez. Si uno de los dos pierde, la mayoría de los votos para la junta cambiarían y el director sería remplazado.

¿Porque el Arizona Daily Star y Tim Steller son tan parcial cuando se trata de TUSD y la junta directiva? Porque no mencionan las cosas positivas que TUSD ha hecho? ¿Porque están en contra de los maestros, trabajadores y las familias (especialmente los de color y que viven en la pobreza)?  Parece que ellos están haciendo todo lo que pueden para influenciar a su favor las próximas elecciones y tapar los grandes pasos que TUSD está dando.

Esto me recuerda la historia de la semana pasada en la primera página del periódico Star del Reportero de Educación Alexis Hicochea titulado “TUSD está muy lento en contratar maestros debido a la propuesta 123” ellos pusieron el lado negativo de la situación y dejaron fuera la información importante que ayudaría al lector a entender la situación.

David Safier escribió un artículo muy preciso donde señala este hecho y el hecho de que la parte de la historia subrayada realmente no es la historia.

Mi conclusión es, el articulo del Star era precisó, pero incompleto. Porque dejo fuera el aumento de los 10 maestro en Mayo, su conclusión de que TUSD no cumple con las promesas a sus maestros es incorrecto. Si el escritor viera la comparación del pago de aumento en TUSD y otros distritos con más cuidado, no hubiera historia para reportar.

Asi como sus colegas, Steller hace buen trabajo señalando los hechos en su columna, pero hace aún mejor trabajo cuando deja fuera los hechos que te ayudan a entender la situación.

El trabajo de Steller es perezoso e incompetente o lo escribe en ese contexto intencionalmente.

También me sorprendió ver que Steller cito a Hicks con dimes y diretes, pero no menciono que Hicks y Stegeman han votado repetidamente en contra del aumento de sueldo para los maestros y los empleados en el pasado, esto es hasta este año cuando votaron unánimemente con la mesa directiva.

¿Tiene que ver estas próximas elecciones con eso?

Desde que H.T. Sánchez ha sido director los maestros han visto muchos cambios en los salarios y la reducción del tamaño de las clases, así como nos prometió en el Centro para Jóvenes John Valenzuela en frente de 200 personas en su primer mes como director.

Antes de Sánchez el único aumento que los maestros vieron fue cuando el director John Pedicone aumento los salarios de base haciendo que los maestros pagaran por su aseguranza que compensaba el aumento de salario.

Hable recientemente con un maestro de TUSD que tiene 20 años en el distrito que dice que antes de Sánchez ella no recuerda haber tenido un aumento de salario tan significativo.

La manera en que este artículo fue escrito implica que la mayoría de la mesa directiva está dañando al distrito y mintiendo al público acera de como los fondos han sido manejados.  Pero si miras la historia y la manera en que la mesa directiva ha votado en el pasado es fácil darse cuenta quien está a favor de los maestros, empleados, estudiantes y familias en el distrito.

Es evidente que la mayoría de la mesa directiva no está a favor de las escuelas públicas y las familias de la clase trabajadora que dependen de ellos.

Lo siento Steller, pero yo prefiero tener en la mesa directiva a personas que trabajen para mejorar nuestras escuelas. Yo apoyo a Sánchez y a la mayoría de la mesa directiva que esta hoy porque me reusó a permitir que el poder vaya a manos de gente como Mark Stegeman (que tenía la mayoría de la mesa directiva Cam Juárez y Kristel Foster fueron elegidos). Yo sentía que ellos no apoyaban a las escuelas públicas porque ellos votaban constantemente para que las cerraran, recortaran fondos, y votaban en contra del aumento de salario para los maestros y trabajadores en el pasado.

They have a councilwoman there who fights for justice and poor people. Her name is Kshama Sawant and her attitude is: Tax the wealthy to fund mass transit!

If they can elect someone like her in Seattle, why can’t we do something similar here in blue, progressive, all-Democrats on the City Council Tucson?

Tienen un miembro del Concilio de la Ciudad que lucha para la justicia y la gente pobre. Ella se llama Kshama Sawant y su filosofía es: Impuestos a los ricos para financiar el transporte masivo!

Si pueden eligir a alguien como ella en Seattle, por que no se puede tambien aquí, en una ciudad progresiva como Tucson?

His message resonated deeply with many people, especially younger ones who have significantly less economic opportunity in front of them than their parents or even grandparents had.

Look at how many states he won, acting like the Democratic Socialist he really is and has been for decades.

As Congressman Raul Grijalva said in an e-mail (Tuesday July 12) “The Democratic Party platform calls for a $15 national hourly minimum wage. It would not have happened if Bernie Sanders had not run such a great presidential race.”

Grijalva also said that “the platform can be turned into policy if we can make big progressive gains in Congress.” Then he asked for money.

I kinda feel like to hell with all the bought and paid for rats in Congress. Instead think of the actions and political consciousness raised among large segments of the population in recent years by such grassroots movements such as Occupy Wall Street and Black Lives Matter. Maybe the Sanders campaign provides some structure to turn those sentiments into the direction of the political revolution he consistently proclaims.

I’m a big believer in acting locally much more than nationally. Our own backyards are where we have the chance to organize and have a real impact.

So I look at the City of Tucson, the city limits, many of whom already vote for Grijalva. They would vote for a righteous woman or man like Bernie if given the chance. Currently the Mayor and Council act more like and even vote kinda like Hillary. Follow the money.

We in the City of Tucson deserve elected reps who would truly acknowledge the aspirations of the voters of Tucson, many of whom are poor or living precariously perched on the edge of poverty or whom are true progressives!

The Sanders campaign has given me hope for doing the same thing locally that Bernie has done nationally.

Tired, timid, sleepy, comfortable Democrats … BEWARE!

¡LOS EXITOS DE LA CAMPAÑA DE SANDERS DEMUESTRA QUE UN MUNDO DIFERENTE ES POSIBLE!

Su mensaje le llego profundamente a mucha gente, especialmente a los jóvenes que tienes menos oportunidades económicas.

Vean en cuantos estados a ganado Sanders actuando como el socialista democrático que es.

Como dijo el Miembro del Consejo Raúl Grijalva en un correo electrónico (Martes 12 de Julio) “El Partido Democrático pide $15 la hora como salario mínimo. Eso no hubiera pasado si Bernie Sanders no hubiera sido tan buen rival en la campaña para la presidencia”.

Grijalva también dijo “La plataforma puede ser convertida en póliza. Si tenemos a nuestro favor a miembros del Congreso”. Y luego el pidió dinero.

Me siento como en el infierno con todas esas compra y paga por ratas en el Congreso. En su lugar piensa en el aumento de las acciones y conciencia política en la gente en los recientes años por los movimientos como Occupy Wall Street y Black Lives Matter. A lo mejor la campaña de Sanders provee alguna estructura para guiar esos sentimientos en la dirección de la revolución política que el constantemente proclama.

Yo soy un creyente de actuar más localmente que nacionalmente. Nuestra propia gente es donde tenemos la oportunidad de organizar y tener un gran impacto.

Entonces yo miro a la Ciudad de Tucson, los límites de la ciudad, muchos de los cuales ya votaron por Grijalva. Ellos votarían por un hombre o una mujer justa como Bernie si tuvieran la oportunidad. Actualmente el Alcalde y el Consejo actúan y votan como Hilary.

Sigue el dinero.

¡Nosotros en la Ciudad de Tucson merecemos representantes electos que realmente saben las aspiraciones de los votantes de Tucson, muchos de los cuales son pobres o viven a punto de serlo!

La Campaña de Sanders me ha dado la esperanza para hacer las mismas cosas que él ha hecho nacionalmente, pero localmente.

Cansado, tímido, adormecido, cómodo Demócrata….

¡TEN CUIDADO!

In Mayor Rothschild’s opinion piece in Friday’s Star  (7-8-2016) he claims that there is “a new sense of pride, optimism, and excitement in our city because of the City’s economic development efforts.”

My question is, according to whom?

The Tucsonans that make less than $10 an hour?

According to the Star article (7-8-2016) about the $12 an hour minimum wage initiative, a quarter of the workforce in Arizona makes less than $10 an hour.
Certainly he is not talking about the 60,000 daily Sun Tran riders, many whom live in poverty, who are facing a large fare increase in September?

The mayor touts a better unemployment rate in Tucson since he has taken office. But I say ‘big deal’ if it doesn’t begin to lift people out of poverty.

Most Tucsonans I know are not excited, optimistic, or proud when it comes to the City of Tucson.

Trickle down economics is a term that was made popular during the Ron Reagan era. The idea is that the government gives incentives (does favors for and gives money to the rich) and that will stimulate the economy. And poor and working people are expected to be happy with whatever bits and pieces happen to trickle down on them.

The Mayor listed incentives given to downtown developers, the owners of the new hockey team, and wealthy corporations coming to Tucson including Home Goods, Comcast, and Caterpillar. The idea is that some jobs will trickle down to Tucsonans such as selling popcorn at the hockey games or maybe even steady part-time  work at a yuppie restaurant downtown. But the Mayor has previously admitted that the average Caterpillar job would pay about $93,000 per year. I doubt that anyone from my barrio is going to score one of those jobs.

When the city tells you they have no money, that they have to raise bus fares, they have to close the city pools, that there is no money for raises for the blue-collar workers, it’s not true.

It’s a matter of priorities and whom the politicians really serve.

The Mayor is a really hardworking guy. He is really skilled at doing mostly cosmetic, token actions that make him look like he loves the poor folk.

But I say, follow the money!

NO CREAN EN LA PUBLICIDAD BOMBA! LO QUE EL ALCALDE LLAMA DESARROLLO ECONOMICO ESTA HACIENDO TRAMPA A LA ECONOMICA!

En la opinion del Alcalde Rothschild el viernes en el Star (7-8-2016), el dijo que había un sentido nuevo de orgullo, optimismo, emoción en nuestra ciudad por el esfuerzo de desarrollar la economía de la ciudad.

Mi pregunta es, de acuerdo a quien?

Los Tucsoneses que hacen menos de $10 la hora?

De acuerdo al articulo del Star (7-8-2016), acerca del salario mínimo de $12; un cuarto de los trabajadores en Arizona hacen menos de $10 la hora.

Ciertamente el no esta hablando de 60,000 personas que usan el camión diariamente, muchos de los cuales viven en la pobreza que estarán haciéndole frente al aumento de tarifas.

La recomendación del Alcalde es un mejor pago para los desempleados en Tucson desde que tomo su posición. Pero yo digo, “gran cosa” si no va a sacar a la gente de la pobreza.

La mayoría de los Tucsonenses que yo conozco no están emocionados, con optimismo o orgullosos cuando se refiere a la ciudad.

Hacer trampa en la económica es un termino que se hizo popular durante el tiempo de Ron Reagan. La idea es que el gobierno (hace favores y da dinero a los ricos) y eso ayuda a la economía y los pobres y la clase trabajadora se supone que debe estar feliz por eso.

El Alcalde hizo una lista de los incentivos que les dio a los encargados del desarrollo en el downtown, las corporaciones que viven a Tucson incluyendo Home Goods, Comcast, and Caterpillar. La idea es que algunos trabajos van a danar la economía de Tucson como vender palomitas en los juegos de hockey, o incluso trabajo de medio tiempo constante en un nuevo restauran de ricos en el downtown.

Pero el Alcalde admitió que los trabajos de Caterpillar va a pagar $95,000 cada año. Dudo que alguien de mi barrio vaya a calificar para uno de esos trabajos.

Cuando la Ciudad te diga que no tiene dinero, que tuvieron que aumentar lar tarifas, que tuvieron que cerrar la albercas publica, que no hay dinero para aumentar la salario de los trabajadores no es verdad.

Es por sus prioridades y a quien ellos sirven en realidad.

El Alcalde es muy trabajador y es muy bueno haciendo creer a la gente pobre con sus acciones que los quiere.

Pero yo digo, sigue el dinero!

Tengo la bendición de haber asistido al Congreso OCDS en San Jose, Cal. del 23-26 Junio, acompañada de mis hermanas en Cristo; Carmen, Toni, y Zulema. Tambien estuvieron en el Congreso P. Godfrey y P. Juan Elias de St. Cruz.

Eramos Cerca de 550 personas sin contar los sacerdotes y seminaristas.

Hermosa experiencia!

Estar en comunidad con mis hermanos en el Carmelo es una paz, una tranquilidad, que solo Dios y nuestra Madre Santísima pueden dar, y no hay palabras para describirla … solo se siente.

Estar en oración en comunidad, acompañada de tantos sacerdotes, seminaristas, y devotos de Nuestra Señora del Carmen hacen experimentar esa paz infinita, y que decir de La Santa Misa que tuvimos todos los días con varios sacerdotes en ella.

P. Donald, Nuestro Prior, lleno del Espirito Santo, organizador del evento, cuido cada detalle para que experimentáramos al máximo la relación con nuestro Señor.

Algo que no había caído en cuenta aunque si lo había notado es la paz y tranquilidad que transmiten nuestros sacerdotes carmelitas: cuando caminan, hablan, explican, oran … Lo hacen con una serenidad y paz interior que la transmiten; no es que caminan o hablan lento, con flojera o cansados hay una GRAN diferencia entre alguien que habla/camina entre pasividad o flojera a una persona llena de paz interior … y ESA es mi inspiración a seguir adelante para alcanzar algún día esa paz; con la ayuda de mi Señor Jesucristo y Nuestra Señora del Monte Carmelo.

CONGRESS 2016 OCDS (DISCALCED CARMELITES)

I am blessed because I attended the Congreso OCDS in San Jose, CA. on June 23-26, along with my sisters in Christ – Carmen, Toni, and Zulema. Also attending the Congress was Padre Juan Elias and Padre Godfrey from Santa Cruz Parish.

There were approximately 550 people attending, not counting all the priests and seminarians.

It was a beautiful experience!

To be in community with my Carmelite sisters gave me a peace and tranquility that only God and our Holy Mother are able to give and there are no words to describe it, only the feeling.

To be in prayer with the community, accompanied by so many priests, seminarians, and devotees of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, makes me feel an infinite peace and the masses with all those priests made it even more peaceful and blessed.

Father Donald, our Prior, full of the Holy Spirit, was the organizer of the event. He took care of every detail so that we could experience a deeper relationship with God.

Something that I didn’t realize before was the peace and serenity that is transmitted by our Carmelite priests when they walk, talk, pray, etc. It’s not that they walked or talked slow or they were lazy or tired. There is a big difference between someone who is lazy or walks and talks slowly than someone full of interior peace.

This is my inspiration to move forward so that I can reach this interior peace. I will do this with the help of my Lord Jesus Christ and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel!

On Friday, June 24, Bus Rider Union members joined in the celebration at the dia de San Juan fiesta and also spoke with our neighbors about the proposed fare increases. You’ll be seeing us out and about at other public events as we work to raise awareness of the proposed fare increases for Sun Tran. Our message was simple: fare increases now is irresponsible to our climate and to the public; we need to have leadership and vision to increase ridership.

As I spoke with people I found that most knew that the fares were being looked at and the reactions fell into two main categories. I heard from many bus riders that the fare increase would be crippling to them and their neighbors. I also heard from transit riders who also have cars, that they were concerned the hikes would halt any transit momentum gained by Sun Link and undermine future improvements and growth to the transit system.

I was also asked what we were proposing to fill the budget gap. BRU has proposed a number of options to identify other revenue streams (see LINK to previous blog), chief among them that the city take an aggressive approach to raising ridership numbers, but when the day is done the amount expected from the fare increase for this year’s budget is $440,000.  That’s really not very much as far as the city budget goes but it’s a lot for the economy riders who overwhelming will carry the burden. The issue is not that the funds aren’t there (we incentivize all kinds of things) it’s an issue of priorities. Let the Tucson Mayor and Council know what you think will make Sun Tran great for all – give them a call today!

On Tuesday, Bus Riders Union and Tucson’s Rising Tide members spoke before Tucson’s Mayor and Council.  The message was simple: Make Sun Tran Great Again! Increase Ridership Not Fares!

Dirk Trachy from Tucson’s Rising Tide shared with Mayor and Council that transit is not only important for people but for our planet. Citing US greenhouse gas emissions from transport at 33% and 34% in Tucson, Dirk informed the council that cities like Munich, Germany have greenhouse gas emissions of 8% largely because of the city’s commitment to viable and affordable mass transit. Dirk urged the Mayor and Council to keep fares affordable and to strengthen Tucson’s mass transit system.

Bus Riders Union members stood together to deliver the following message:

Transit isn’t about the 1%, it’s not about the Trumps out there.

It’s about the people like us who build this city everyday – it’s our seniors who use the bus to try and enjoy what golden years they have, it’s the moms hustling at McDonald’s to keep the fridge full and the kids who depend on the bus to get to school – it’s about Tucson and all of us who bring it to life every day.

If you raise these fares you make it even harder for them to live and build this city and you stand in the way of making Sun Tran great for ALL of us. We may have an award-winning transit system but we are still reeling from the loss of ridership after the strike. So we urge you to join us in a political revolution Tucson-style.

We brought a hat (see photo) along for each of you that we hope you’ll wear with us as a symbol of the important socio-economic role that affordable transit plays both in helping poor people in our city to have dignified transit and to Make Sun Tran Great Again for ALL Residents of Tucson. It’s time to raise ridership, not fares.

Hagan Sun Tran grande nuevamente! Aumenta el numero de pasajeros mas no la tarifa!

El martes, los usuarios del camión y Rising Tide de Tucson hablaron frente al concilio y el alcalde de Tucson.  El mensaje era simple: Hagan Sun Tran grande nuevamente! Aumenta el numero de pasajeros mas no la tarifa!

Dirk Trachy de Tucson Rising Tide compartió con el alcalde y Concilio que el transporte no solo es importante para la gente, pero para nuestro planeta también. Citando a emisiones de gases de invernadero de Estados Unidos del transporte en 33% y 34% en Tucson, Dirk informó al Concilio que ciudades como Múnich, Alemania tienen las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero de 8% en gran parte debido a compromiso de la ciudad con transporte público viable y accesible. Dirk insistió al alcalde y a Consejo a mantener precios accesibles para fortalecer el sistema de transporte masivo de Tucson.

Los miembros del Sindicato de pasajeros de camiones están actuando juntos para entregar el mensaje siguiente:

Tránsito no es sobre el 1%, no se trata de los ricos como Trump por ahí.

Es sobre las personas como nosotros que construimos esta ciudad día a día – se trata de las personas mayores que utilizan el autobús para disfrutar de los años dorados que tienen, de los padres solteros que trabajan en McDonald ‘ s con el sueldo mínimo para mantener la familia, y de los niños en el autobús para que puedan asistir a la escuela – se trata de Tucson y de todos los que usamos cada día la transportación publica.

Si suben las tarifas se hará aún más difícil para ellos sobrevivir y construir esta ciudad y no se podrá hacer de Sun Tran algo grande nuevamente para todos nosotros. Es posible que tengamos un sistema galardonado pero todavía estamos recuperandonos de la pérdida de pasajeros después de la huelga. Así que lo invitamos a unirse a nosotros en una revolución política estilo Tucson.

Les dimos nuestras gorras (ver foto) al concilio y al alcalde.

Esperamos que ustedes usarán la gorra que les regalamos como un símbolo de la importancia socio-económica el tránsito juega un papel importante tanto en ayudar a la gente pobre en nuestra ciudad que merecen un sistema digno de tránsito y a hacer de Sun Tran grande nuevamente para todos los residentes de Tucson. Es el momento de elevar el número de pasajeros, no de las tarifas.

Much thanks to Karen Haggar from St. Thomas the Apostle parish. Not only does she give us a donation every month, she passed on to us this tribute to Dan who died on April 30 at the age of 94. It was written by John Nichols in The Nation magazine (May 23, 2016). He talks about how Dan was inspired by Dorothy Day and the Catholic Worker and how everything Dan stood for in his life has evolved more or less into the economic justice message of Pope Francis, his fellow jesuit.

Dan, and his brother Phil’s lived out Christian faith, is more than anything what inspired me to become a Catholic and to try to live out a faithful Catholic Worker existence for the long haul.

I had the privilege of meeting Dan three times and Phil once. To me, they were spiritual giants because they acted like serious and humble servants of God rather than ‘movement heavies.’

Soy un convertido al Catolicismo.

La razon que soy un Catolico es por los ejemplos de los sacerdotes que han luchado para la paz y la liberacion de su gente en muchas paises Latino Americanos, cuando fui un vato mas joven.

Uno de estos fue Dan Berrigan, un Jesuita, murio el 30 de Abril, 2016. Tenia 94 anos. Su hermano Felipe, tambien un sacerdote fue tambien muy fregon.

Dan fue un autor y poeta y le gustaba much los profetas del Antiguo Testamento.

Dan y Felipe fueron muy inteligente pero tambien fueron muy valiosos. Los dos estuvieron en la pinta muchas veces por su hechos de justicia. Ellos metieron su fe en la accion sin miedo.

Tres veces me junte con Dan y una vez con Felipe. Para mi ellos fueron gigantes espirituales porque ellos se portaron como unos servientes humildes de Dios en lugar de principes o gente muy importante.
