Msgr. Tom Cahalane, pastor of Our Mother of Sorrows parish is coming to Casa Maria to lead a discussion on The Joy of the Gospel by Pope Francis!

We don’t know anyone as fired up as Tom is about The Joy of The Gospel!

The Holy Father doesn’t mince words or water down the truth. We know that Msgr. Tom will act the same as the Holy Father.

Just as the commandment “Thou shalt not kill” sets the a clear limit in order to safeguard the value of human life, today we also have to say “thou shalt not” to an economy of exclusion and inequality. Such an economy kills. How can it be that it is not a news item when an elderly homeless person dies of exposure, but it is news when the stock market loses two points? This is the case of exclusion. Can we continue to stand by when food is thrown away while people are starving? This is a case of inequality. Today everything comes under the laws of competition and the survival of the fittest, where the powerful feed upon the powerless. As a consequence, masses of people find themselves excluded and marginalized: without work, without possibilities, without any means of escape.

Human beings are themselves considered consumer goods to be used and discarded. We have created a “throw away” culture which is now spreading. It is no longer simply about exploitation and oppression, but something new. Exclusion ultimately has to do with what it means to be a part of the society in which we live; those excluded are no longer society’s underside or its fringes or its disenfranchised – they are no longer even part of it. The excluded are not the “exploited” but the outcast, the “leftovers”.

He then goes on to bash trickledown economics.

Así como el mandamiento de “no matar” pone un límite claro para asegurar el valor de la vida humana, hoy tenemos que decir “no a una economía de exclusión y la inequidad”. Esa economía mata. No puede ser que no sea noticia que muere de frío un anciano en situación de calle y que sí lo sea una caída de dos puntos en la bolsa. Eso es exclusión. No se puede tolerar más que se tire comida cuando hay gente que pasa hambre. Eso es inequidad. Hoy todo entra dentro del juego de la competitividad y de la ley del más fuerte, donde el poderoso se come al más débil. Como consecuencia de esta situación, grandes masas de la población se ven excluidas y marginadas: sin trabajo, sin horizontes, sin salida.

Se considera al ser humano en sí mismo como un bien de consumo, que se puede usar y luego tirar. Hemos dado inicio a la cultura del “descarte” que, además, se promueve. Ya no se trata simplemente del fenómeno de la explotación y de la opresión, sino de algo nuevo: con la exclusión queda afectada en su misma raíz la pertenencia a la sociedad en la que se vive, pues ya no se está en ella abajo, en la periferia, o sin poder, sino que se está afuera. Los excluidos no son “explotados” sino desechos, “sobrantes”.

El continúa criticando a la economía que va de gota en gota.

NOV. 3, 2014 …A NEW DAY AT THE TRANSIT TASK FORCE

I have been attending the Transit Task Force (TTF) meetings for over two years now. This task force is formed by representatives of all the City Council Offices and Citizen Transportation Advisory Committee (CTAC). City staff is also present, including Sun-Tran Administration. Yesterday, for the first time, I thought this group of people that “represent” bus riders and all stakeholders, was actually moving in the right direction.

For several years it has been a constant battle between the Bus Riders Union and the city bureaucrats not to increase the bus fares. For this reason, the City Council asked the TTF to come up with a Transit Fare Policy. Let me reiterate this, the Council asked this committee, NOT the staff, to come up with this Fare Policy.

After so many meetings of intense discussions on the issue, yesterday the TTF finally agreed on a Transit Fare Policy for the City. The TTF recommendations will be presented to the City Council sometime in December.

But wait, who is going to present it? If it wasn’t because one of the members of the task force asked the City staff about it, it was going to be presented only by city staff. The TTF made it clear to the staff that they or a representative was going to be there and/or present their recommendation and be available to answer questions if necessary.

What is going to be presented? It is supposed to be the recommendations from the Transit Task Force Fare Policy right? WRONG. The staff is going to present their own recommendations as well as the TTF fare policy. What is going on? Why are they going to do that? Who’s interests are they really representing?

Maybe the Bus Riders Union has to make their own recommendations, and I am sure they will!

The transit analysis of Councilwoman Karen Uhlich has helped shape the thinking of the Bus Riders Union and key members of the TTF. The Task Force, led by Suzanne Shafer, has come up with a plan to aggressively market the bus. This will significantly increase ridership, help the environment and create increased revenue to maintain the system. Thus there is no need to raise fares.

I wonder which side the City Council will support! What do you think? So much for the hard work of the Transit Task Force if the Council decides to go with staff. Why then have a TTF?

Anyway, I just wanted to applaud the TTF for the hard work they have been doing, (although I do not agree with many of their decisions) for coming up with a fair Transit Fare Policy, and for moving in the right direction towards improving the city transit system.

If everything goes according to plan, Pima County voters will vote to approve $650 million worth of bond projects in November, 2015.

The Bond Committee makes recommendations to the Board of Supervisors as to what projects should be funded. Brian Flagg from Casa Maria is a member of the Committee thanks to Supervisor Richard Elias appointing him.

The Bond is very important because these days resources to better the community are harder than ever to find.

So as to not get divided and conquered by the County Manager, anti- poverty, environmental, faith and neighborhood groups have aligned to support each other’s interests in this process.

This coalition needs to show up in force on Nov.7 to support the FULL FUNDING for OPEN SPACE part of the Bond. The Committee will vote for other parts of the Bond such as Affordable Housing, Neighborhood Re-investment and Job Path on later dates.

Para no ser divididos y conquistados por el Administrador del Condado, los grupos en contra de la pobreza, del medio ambiente, grupos de Fe, y grupos de los vecindarios se han aliado para apoyar el interés de uno y otro durante el proceso.

Esta coalición necesita de su presencia el 7 de Noviembre para apoyar al COMPLETO FINANCIAMIENTO de ESPACIOS ABIERTOS como parte del paquete. El Comité votara sobre otros temas del financiamiento tales como la Vivienda Asequible, Re-inversión en los Vecindarios y Job Path en otras sesiones.

Is this the most important story the Arizona Daily Star has published in recent years? (As wells dry up on the outskirts, hauling water becomes norm, by Tony Davis, 10/26/14)

Could it be that Tony Davis is a prophet and at least in this one case The Star allowed him to write the truth about the lack of water in our beautiful but ever more populated Sonoran desert?

Tony explained that “Wells are drying up all around the fringes of Tucson – the Tortolita foothills on the north, the Santa Rita Mountain foothills on the south, the Tanque Verde Valley to the east, parts of the Tucson Mountain foothills on the west. These areas have been magnets to nature-lovers. They offer mountain views, lush desert, mesquite bosques and plenty of wildlife.”

“Arizona water officials say these drying wells could be the first sign of trouble for the entire region. “It’s sort of like the canary in the coal mine,” says Frank Corkhill, the Arizona Department of Water Resources’ chief hydrologist. “People in the periphery, on the margins of a basin, where the aquifer is not highly productive to start with, are often the ones first affected by the drought.”

And when we run out of water, who do you think will have what’s left of it, the poor people?

Happy Birthday LAURA!

Today October 20 is the birthday of the pillar and soul of Casa Maria, Laura Alameda!

For those of you familiar with Casa Maria in a day to day kind of way, who works harder than Laura?

She only made it through 6^th grade in Nogales, Sonora and then went to work so her sister could continue in school. In recent years Laura, a single mother, has seen both her daughters graduate from Pueblo High School. The youngest one is not only a tennis star at Pima College, she has a job at the Panda Express!

On Saturday night 10 of us from Casa Maria (Brian, Cesar Chavez, Elsa, Flaca, Amalia, Laura’s mom Librada and Cesar Aguirre and his mom and dad, big Cesar and Maria) celebrated by going to see Ramon Ayala the king of the accordion and Larry Harnandez play at the AVA Amphitheatre.

It was wild!

¡Hoy, 20 de Octubre es el cumpleaños de uno de los pilares y del alma de Casa María, Laura Alameda!

¿Para aquellos que están familiarizados con el trabajo diario de Casa María, quién es más trabajadora que Laura?

Ella solo logro terminar el 6to grado de la escuela en Nogales, Sonora y luego fue a trabajar para que su hermana pudiera continuar en la escuela. En los últimos años Laura, madre soltera, ha visto a sus hijas graduarse del a escuela secundaria Pueblo. ¡La más joven no solo es una estrella del tenis en el Pima, si no que ella también trabaja en el Panda Express!

El Sábado en la noche 10 de nosotros de Casa María (Brian, Cesar Chávez, Elsa, Flaca, Amalia, la mamá de Laura (Librada) y Cesar Aguirre con su mamá y papá Cesar grande y María) celebramos viendo a Ramón Ayala, el Rey del Acordeón y a Larry Hernández en el AVA Amphitheatre.

¡Estuvo de locura!

The homeless, the familias of our barrios and Casa Maria…

We are all dog and cat lovers!

Thanks to our good buddy and fellow South Tucsonan Dan Eckstrom for his guidance on this matter.

In addition to doing the right thing for our 4 legged friends, this bond measure is important because its’ success paves the way for next year’s bond election. The 2015 bond election could provide much needed funds for such things as affordable housing, neighborhood reinvestment projects, open space, job training and improvements to local parks.

We feel so strongly about this that we shelled out some dollars to have these words appear in this year’s voter guide that is sent to every single voter!

Dear Friends and Neighbors:

Casa Maria is a dedicated member of the lay Catholic Worker Movement, and has faithfully devoted itself to acts of mercy and caring involving the homeless, as well as for the poor families residing in neighboring barrios. Dedicated volunteers serve almost 1,500 people a day with 600 bagged lunches for the homeless and up to 200 bags of groceries for needy families.

Serving meals to the homeless and the poor is not all that we do. At least two times a year, we invite those that we serve to bring their dogs and cats to be examined by veterinarians and other medical volunteers. Vaccinating for parvo/distemper and performing spay and neuter services are the highlights of these barrio clinics. In almost all instances this is the only time that these pets are provided with medical examinations.

The homeless are deeply attached to their pets and consider them both as family and their best friend. Very often their pets keep them from feeling isolated and they help encourage interaction with others. For those that we serve, pets provide a deep sense of comfort, loyalty and companionship. Living on the street can be dangerous, and animals provide security and a real sense of protection.

The care and love of animals is something very important to us. It is for this reason that we wholeheartedly endorse the approval of Proposition 415, which will transform Pima County’s only open admission shelter in to a modern state-of-the-art animal care facility where dogs and cats are treated and rehabilitated, and then placed into loving homes through adoptions. Please join us in encouraging all those you know to vote YES on Proposition 415.

Aparte de hacer lo correcto por nuestros amigos de 4 patas, esta medida financiera es importante porque su excito pavimenta el camino para las próximas medidas financieras en las elecciones del siguiente año. Las medidas financieras del 2015 podrían proporcionar fondos muy necesarios para cosas como viviendas asequibles, proyectos de reinversión en los vecindarios, el espacio libre, entrenamiento para trabajos y mejorar los parques locales.

¡Esto es tan importante para nosotros que dimos algunos dólares para que estas palabras aparecieran en la guía de votantes de este año, que es enviada a todos los votantes!

Estimados Amigos y Vecinos:

Casa María es un miembro dedicado al Movimiento de Trabajador Católico secular. Y se ha dedicado con fidelidad a actos de misericordia y cuidado relativo a las personas sin hogar, así como a las familias pobres que residen en los barrios de la vecindad. Voluntarios dedicados sirvieron a casi 1,500 personas al día con 600 comidas en bolsas para las personas sin hogar y hasta 200 bolsas de alimentos para las familias necesitadas.

Servir comidas a las personas sin hogar y a los pobres no es todo lo que hacemos. Al menos dos veces al año, invitamos a aquellos a los que servimos a que traigan a sus perros y gatos a ser examinados por veterinarios y nuestros voluntarios médicos. La vacunación contra el parvovirus / moquillo y realizar servicio de esterilización son las cosas subrayables en estas clínicas de barrio. En casi todos los casos ésta es la única vez en que a estas mascotas se les proporcionan exámenes médicos.

Las personas sin hogar están profundamente apegadas a sus mascotas y las consideran tanto familia como su mejor amigo. A menudo sus mascotas evitan que se sientan aislados, les ayudan a animar la interrelación con otros. Para aquellos a los que servimos, las mascotas proporcionan una profunda sensación de confort, lealtad y compañía. Vivir en la calle puede ser peligroso y los animales proporcionan seguridad y un real sentido de protección.

El cuidado y amor a los animales es algo muy importante para nosotros. Es por esta razón que de todo corazón endosamos la aprobación de la Proposición 415, que transformaría el único albergue de admisión abierta del Condado de Pima en una instalación de cuidado de animales moderna de último modelo en la que los perros y gatos son tratados y rehabilitados y después puestos en hogares que les quieren a través de adopciones. Por favor únase a nosotros en animar a aquellos a los que usted conoce a votar SÍ a la Proposición 415.

I first came to Casa Maria when I was a teenager in high school. I was going to Salpointe Catholic High School, and I believe that I learned about Casa Maria through a volunteer project. I kept coming, because something called me to the service. I came every weekend for I’m not sure how long, but it was about a year. George would help in the kitchen and supervise. I remember serving the soup many times to Casa Maria guests. I remember serving the soup with a big smile. I was happy to help and to be able to serve people. Each new person was another opportunity to hand someone a soup, and assist someone in getting the sustenance they needed for the day.

Something about serving at Casa Maria inspired me in my career trajectory. While many who came to the kitchen were from the neighborhood, some were from the other side of the border. The simple tenant of welcoming the neighbor is such a powerful concept. In Jesus’ early life, he travelled quite a bit, and he must have relied on the assistance of others throughout his journey. That is what we are doing at Casa Maria, at a very basic yet profound level, welcoming the stranger and loving our neighbors. By being inspired to help my neighbors, I went to law school and became an immigration lawyer. Over the years I thought about Casa Maria, but didn’t come back until I moved back to Tucson this last year.

It is amazing that after so many years, not much has changed about the kitchen. The same small space gives sustenance to hundreds of people every day. George has since passed away, but Brian Flagg and others are still going strong. There are new faces, but the tenant is the same: service to the poor.

¡Aun sirviendo después de todos estos años!

La primera vez que vine a Casa María fue cuando era una adolescente en la escuela secundaria. Estaba en la Escuela Secundaria Católica Salpointe, y creo que supe sobre Casa María a través de un proyecto de voluntarios. Continúe viniendo porque algo me llamaba a hacer este servicio. Venia todos los fines de semana, no se por cuanto tiempo, pero fue como por un año. Jorge supervisaba y ayudaba en la cocina. Recuerdo server la sopa muchas veces a los invitados de Casa María. Recuerdo servir la sopa con una gran sonrisa. Estaba feliz de ayudar y de ser capaz de servir a las personas. Cada nueva persona era otra oportunidad de darle a alguien una sopa, y asistir a alguien en obtener la sustancia que necesitaban para el día.

Algo sobre el servir en Casa María me inspiro en la trayectoria de mi carrera. Mientras que muchos de los que venían a la cocina eran del vecindario, algunos fueron del otro lado de la frontera. El simple hecho de dar la bienvenida a los vecinos es un concepto muy poderoso. En la vida de Jesús, el viajo bastante, el debió haber dependido de la asistencia de otros a través de sus viajes. Esto es lo que hacemos en Casa María, en un nivel muy básico pero profundo, al darle la bienvenida al extraño y amando a nuestros vecinos. Al ser inspirada a ayudar a mis vecinos, fui a la escuela de leyes y me hice una abogada de inmigración. A través de los años pensé sobre Casa María, pero no regrese hasta que me cambie de regreso a Tucson este año pasado.

Es increíble que después de tantos años, no haya cambiado mucho sobre la cocina. El mismo espacio pequeño da sostenimiento a cientos de personas cada día. Jorge ya ha pasado a mejor vida, pero Brian Flagg y otros aun están trabajando fuerte. Hay nuevas caras, pero el trabajo es el mismo: servir a los pobres.

END THE DESEGREGATION LAWSUIT NOW!

We at Casa Maria, along with others, are seriously contemplating undertaking a campaign to defend our schools that would look like this:

To: The Plaintiffs (especially Sylvia Campoy) and the lawyers (MALDEF and Ruben Salter)

END THE DESEGREGATION LAWSUIT NOW!

The federal judge says that Tucson Unified School District (TUSD) needs to comply with the de-segregation lawsuit.

So last spring TUSD came forth with a plan that evaluated the progress made in regards to the integration of their magnet schools. The plan said that Ochoa and Robison Elementary, Utterback Middle, and Pueblo High have received “elimination warnings”, giving them one enrollment cycle to meet the criteria for incoming grades.

These are not bad schools even though the term ‘elimination warning’ certainly screams that sentiment. In fact, in recent years, Ochoa has gone from being a D school to a B school. The problem is that there simply aren’t enough Anglo kids available to integrate all the TUSD schools. The District is now 70% minority, the opposite of what it was 40 years ago when the desegregation lawsuit began.

Are Latino or Black or Native kids magically going to become smarter and more academically successful just because they sit next to white kids in school?

The solution to the problem is certainly not to force kids from Pueblo and Cholla on buses bound for Palo Verde or Santa Rita, or the other way around. This has actually been talked about.

The solution is to make sure that Pueblo and other schools that serve neighborhoods mired in poverty have schools every bit as good as Sabino or Sahuaro or even Catalina Foothills!

So in the name of desegregation, Southsiders are supposed to sit and watch our schools be de-funded in a year? Is not de-funding a huge first step to closure?

We at Casa Maria would truly appreciate anyone’s input on this matter.

El plan indica que las escuelas primarias Ochoa y Robison, la escuela media Utterback y la escuela secundaria Pueblo han recibido “advertencias de eliminación”, dándoles un ciclo de registración escolar para cumplir con el criterio para los siguientes grados.

Estas no son escuelas malas aunque el término “advertencia de eliminación” por seguro grita dicho sentimiento. De hecho, en años recientes, Ochoa ha pasado de ser una escuela con calificación D a una escuela con calificación B. El problema es que simplemente no hay suficientes niñ@s Anglos disponibles para integrar todas las escuelas de TUSD. El Distrito ahora tiene un 70% de minorías, lo opuesto a lo que fue hace 40 años cuando se inicio el juicio de desegregación.

¿Los niños latinos, negros o nativos mágicamente se van a volver más inteligentes y más exitosos académicamente en las escuelas simplemente por sentarse al lado de un niño blanco?

La solución al problema, con seguridad, no es forzar a los alumnos de Pueblo y Cholla a ir en autobuses a Palo Verde o Santa Rita, ni en dirección contraria. En realidad se ha balado sobre hacer esto.

¡La solución es asegurarse que la escuela Pueblo y las otras escuelas que funcionan en los barrios agobiados por pobreza tengan escuelas tan buenas como las escuelas Sabino, Sahuaro, o incluso Catalina Foothills!

Por esto, en nombre de la desegregación, las personas del lado sur ¿debemos esperar sentados y ver cómo le quitan fondos a nuestras escuelas en un año? ¿El quitarle los fondos no es el primer paso para cerrar las escuelas?
