ROSARY AND MARCH TO CITY HALL A LARGE SUCCESS

IMG_20150824_121141

Much thanks to all the bus riders and their supporters, Fr. David Guzman O.C.D. and the Guadalupanas from Santa Cruz Church, and Mi Familia Vota.

The Rosary out in front of the Ronstadt Transit Center was beautiful. The sight of the City Hall first floor conference room filled to capacity with bus riders sharing their stories of bus strike struggle with Mayor Rothschild and City Manager Miguel Ortega was also a sight to behold. Thanks to them for listening.

IMG_20150824_132707IMG_20150824_132741  IMG_20150824_130441

After listening to numerous stories of bus rider hardship, City Manager Miguel Ortega put aside his prepared remark, which he said contained a bunch of facts and figures. Instead he directly addressed the crowd, expressing his frustration and declaring that he would steadfastly hammer the management  company to the negotiating table.

IMG_20150824_130806

It  was greatly appreciated, but we know that these are only words. The words have to be turned into action.

The Tucson Bus Riders Union is not going to stand around and wait for politicians and bureaucrats to make this a reality!

After the Mayor and City Manager dashed out of the room we, the bus riders and their supporters, did not leave the conference room. We stayed and discussed next steps.

There was consensus that it is time for DIRECT ACTION. Time for us to consider putting our bodies on the line for a just settlement of the strike.

So we scheduled an emergency TBRU meeting to discuss this.

Wednesday, August 26th at 4p.m. at the Armory Park Senior Center.

END THE STRIKE NOW!

END THE STRIKE NOW!

Will someone step up and solve bus strike?

It is clear the bus strike is hurting our fellow citizens, businesses, schools and our economy here in Tucson. My question is: Where is the leadership? Which one of our elected officials will step up and get Tucson moving again?

THE STRIKE HAS TO END RIGHT NOW // LA HUELGA TIENE QUE TERMINAR AHORA

TBRU

It is an attack on poor people, people of color and the entire bus riding public.

People are losing their jobs because they can’t get to work.

If something like this affected the foothills like this strike affects the Southside, something would have been done about it.  If this strike affected the lives of rich people the way it affects the lives of poor people, a solution would have already been found.

We urge the Teamsters to continue to offer new plans and new concessions so as to settle this strike right now.

But the Teamsters are not the real enemy of the bus riders.  They have made new offers to negotiate and Sun Tran has refused to come to the negotiating table.

The City of Tucson is the entity that can tell the management company what to do and give them the money to do it.

Sun Tran, the City, the RTA, and the powers that be can find $200 million to build the useless trolley and $4 million a year to maintain and operate it, but they can’t find a few million to end the strike?

The City is saving $800,000 a week by running hardly any busses during the strike.

In the last few years the city has given away more than $13 million in incentives to developers to gentrify the downtown.

The list goes on and on.  They have got the power.  They can find a solution.

Make no mistake; this strike exists in the context of a larger war against working people and against unions.  Working people are being pitted against poor people, but unions have always acted in spirit of an injury to one is an injury to all.

Mari Herreras, editor of the Tucson Weekly, captured this notion of solidarity in this weeks’ issue

“This past year or so, our crazyland state Legislature has made it difficult for unions to organize   new members and represent members. We are now in a state and national climate that is increasingly anti-union and those messages become more well-funded every political season. So, I guess, what I hope can happen here, is that because that political climate exists, that people, even when it makes our lives harder during the strike, consider supporting the strike nonetheless.

Even if Sun Tran drivers make more than you do right now, this strike is about all of our futures and not just that of our local bus drivers. Every Labor Day, you see the Facebook memes go out reminding folks that if not for labor unions, we wouldn’t have the weekend, etc. True, but our lives right now are a bit more than the weekend-wages, better working conditions and job security need to be extended to everyone, even those who don’t belong to a union.

Crazyland has to change and Tucson needs to be a city that isn’t just a nice affordable place to live because it notoriously pays its workers low wages. Perhaps a good union strike is actually what this city needs right now. Sun Tran workers, show us how it’s done. Yes, this is a pain. We’re a creative city-figure out rides. Let Crazyland know that Tucson is a city that remains a troublemaking kind of town.”

We are all frustrated and angry.

Let us channel that anger into Struggle, in solidarity with the Teamsters.

by Cesar Aguirre

The hot dogs were delicious, the turn-out was great, the music was loud and the line was long. Everyone was waiting in the heat to join the Tucson Bus Riders Union and the Teamsters, enduring the humidity left behind by the morning’s drizzles, intensified by the scorching desert sun. Councilwoman Regina Romero was there to support. My girls were excited to participate

.rgina tbru

We walked the picket on Friday afternoon and were able to have a great conversation about the strike and why we support the strikers.

IMG_20150807_170343_1On our way to the picket line on Friday my daughter Alissa asked, “Do we have to go daddy? We’ve been to hundreds of these protests before.” I let her know that this was not a protest. I was able to explain to her the difference between a protest and a strike. I let her know how important unions are and why we must support them. I explained that even though some bus riders might be upset about it, it’s not the workers fault they are on strike. I said, “The powers that be want us fighting with each other over how many crumbs we get from them, to make sure that we don’t unite and get what we deserve.” The strike is not happening because the drivers and mechanics are greedy and want more than they deserve, but rather the fault of Sun Tran and the City for being greedy and not figuring out how to come up with the money. They want us to believe that they only have enough money to either give the workers what they deserve or to keep the fares down and not cut routes, but not for both. This is not true.

tbru pic

When the City wanted to build the street car for the UofA students and rich developers downtown, they found the $200 million. When they wanted rich developers to develop downtown, they found over $10 million worth of incentives to give away. But when it comes to poor and working class bus riders, drivers and mechanics, they could care less and would rather drag out an ugly battle, making the poor and working class endure further suffering. Where the hell is Mayor Rothschild on all this?

My daughter was fired up after our conversation. Even she, at 11 years old, understood that in order to end this strike and insure that the drivers and mechanics get what they deserve we must stand in solidarity and work together to get the City of Tucson to step in, find the money, and END THE STRIKE NOW!

Please call: (520) 791-4201 or email: jonathan.rothschild@tucsonaz.gov Mayor Rothschild and tell him to do everything in his power to END THE STRIKE NOW!

IMG_20150807_170340

by Brian Flagg

Tim Stellers’ column in Sunday’s Daily Star (http://tucson.com/news/local/columnists/steller/steller-council-could-have-helped-avert-bus-strike/article_cf85fb57-8986-5dae-839e-a913ebba70e4.html) was an attack on the Bus Riders Union and the majority of the City Council who have, for the most part, supported the transit system, bus riders and poor people. His column was a crude attempt to pit working people against poor people.

tim s

Steller claims that if the council would have previously raised fares and cut many more routes they would now have the money to pay more to bus drivers and mechanics and thus avoid the current strike.

The quotes attribute to Teamster President Andy Marshall in the story were despicable; both to the Bus Rider Union and the Council.

When I confronted Andy on Sunday morning before the Teamsters informational meeting at Reid Park, he denied having said the Council was stupid and cowardly for not raising fares and cutting routes.  Then he told his entire membership about this and vowed to complain to the Star.  He also said he would repeat that he was misquoted at the big BUS RIDER UNION-END THE STRIKE NOW HOT DOG FEAST on TUESDAY, AUGUST 11 AT 4:30 at the Ronstadt Center.

I can relate because just two weeks ago the Star totally misquoted me in a story about the Ronstadt Transit Center.

County Supervisor Richard Elias and Fred Yamashita, chair of the Pima Area Labor Federation, will also speak. City Council members have been invited.

Be there!

Support the bus Drivers and Mechanics!

End the Strike Now!

A Marshall Plan for Mexico

volunteer-abroad-mexicoby Brian Flagg

The syndicated national columnist Esther Cepeda wrote an editorial in Saturday’s Daily Star entitled “On immigration, most people can’t handle the truth.” She gives it up to Angela Merkel, the President of Germany, for being so honest in saying that all of the world’s immigrants cant come to Germany (or the U.S. for that matter).

The question should not be how many immigrants can come to Germany (or the U.S). The real question is how come the U.S. and Germany don’t use all of their power and might to make it so that poor people now forced to immigrate can find livable jobs in their own countries.

There is a right, just, and humane thing that we, the people of the U.S., could do.

And it would be the exact opposite of the trade pacts such as NAFTA, CAFTA and the recently proposed and enacted TPP. These trade deals basically codify massive exploitation of workers and resources in countries to the South.

Instead, how about the U.S. doing a Marshall Plan for Mexico? And maybe Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala too?

That is what we did in Germany after World War II so as to revive the economies of war-torn Western Europe.

TREO (I mean the Sunshine Corridor), Mayor Rothschild, Mr. Huckelberry, the Hi Spanic Chamber of Commerce, they all look to trade and better relations with Mexico to provide more economic opportunity for Southern Arizona. But make no mistake, these efforts are not about reducing poverty and the lack of dignified employment on both sides of the border. It is about privileged monied interests on both sides of the border making more money for themselves at the expense of those living in abject poverty.

This has got to change – We really should do a Marshall Plan for Mexico so that the Mexican people can choose to live in their own country with jobs and dignity and not have to figure out perilous ways survive in their own country … or journey North.

We’ve got to be real and think big!

Many would say that this is not practical, it is too visionary.

But I say maybe you are not a real Catholic or a real Christian if you can’t read the scriptures, envision justice (the Kingdom of God), maybe talk to Jesus about it and then begin to figure how to act on it.

I’m not talking about lots of pious thoughts or prayers.

And I’m not interested in making people feel guilty.

Instead I want concrete action, with and for the victims of the Demonic Economic System in which we live.

Full employment now! In the U.S., Mexico and all of Latin America!

____________________________________________________________

¡TRABAJOS JUSTOS AHORITA! ¡En las E.U., Mexico, y todo Latino América!
