A Book Recommendation: If Nuns Ruled the World: Ten Sisters on a Mission By Jo Piazza

Since March 2013 when Pope Francis was elected we have consistently seen/heard his name throughout the media… Jo Piazza, in her book, If Nuns Ruled the World: Ten Sisters on a Mission,writes about ten nuns, most of which names you have never heard in the media. She profiles these nuns who have dedicated their lives to following in the footsteps of Christ. One of the goals of the author is to show nuns as people as opposed to stereotypes (20); she believes they each should individually be featured on their own magazine cover (7). I highly recommend this book to all: for non-Catholics to assist them in shattering the stereotypes and for American Catholics – both men and women – who would like to be proud of the work that is being done. You can learn more about these dynamic women who are doing the work Christ has called us to do and Pope Francis has reiterated and reminded us to do.

These nuns all work in various arenas of justice issues. A few include: lobbying for political justice for the poorest of the poor in America, running a safehouse for victims of human trafficking, assisting incarcerated women and their children to rejoin the community and end the cycle of intergenerational incarceration, fighting for women’s status in the Church, working to fight for rights for the LGBT-Catholic community, and the most heart-wrenching story about a nun who survived being tortured who now works with victims of torture to openly share their experiences in order to being a healing process.

A few lessons I learned from reading this book:

Live out your vocational call. Find your vocational calling from God through meditation and contemplation and then live it. Throughout the book there is consistent language among the nuns of a desire within to serve, a constant calling from God, a gut sense, or an inner sense and then there was confirmation. One sister said: “I knew there was a desire in me to assist. I can’t explain it any better than to just say that it became clear to me. I had a sense that I could make a difference” (136).

Use the gifts you have been given to serve others.Sister Simone Campbell mentioned that she feels a deeper connection to God when she is in the presence of the people she feels called to serve (58).

Pray. When we pray, it isn’t the other people who are changed, it is us who get changed (136), Sister Joan Dawber suggested. Prayer, meditation, contemplation, or just sitting and being in the presence of God are crucial in the lives of a spiritually healthy soul.

Dream impossible dreams of justice – then make them come true.(213) Sister Joan Dawber, who battles against human trafficking reminds us that, “The poor dont always have to be the economically poor. The poor can be those who have suffered tremendous injustice. God’s reign is about bringing peace and justice to people” (149).

Be a truthteller.Little by little these women believe they will change society and the church. “They stopped believing in the old lies a long time ago and started living out their own truths” (248). All of these women have stayed their course. Sister Nora Nash reminds us, that we can look at the Scriptures to provide a value base for promoting the common good, human dignity, human rights, sustainability, and overall corporate responsibility” (164) to protect to protect and defend the rights of those who are vulnerable in our society.

God is so intertwined in the lives of these women – every minute of everyday. They are able to live in the present and embrace each moment. After you read this book, I challenge you to incorporate one of these five lessons – or

a different lesson you learned from reading this book – into your daily life. Break your heart open in service to others and you will feel the deeper call of love from the Gospel (58). Continue to strive for a positive transformation in your life. Mirror some of these nuns habits. And look to the divine within you to make this happen.

To the author: Jo – We would like to see the selfie with snapped with the statue to Saint Francis, as suggested by Sister Nora Nash. Thank you for a real glimpse into the lives of these women. Thank you for capturing their enormous presence. Thank you for providing an opportunity for a spiritual shift for your readers. I hope you achieve your dream of getting these dynamic women all together in one place – not only for you sake, but our sake and for their sake as well – please be sure to write about it!

Desde marzo del 2013 cuando el Papa Francisco fue elegido, consistentemente hemos visto y oído su nombre atraves de los medios. Jo Piazza en su libro “Si las monjas gobernaron el mundo: diez hermanas en misión, escribe acerca de diez monjas de las cuales nunca hemos oído en los medios. Ella revela a estas religiosas quienes han dedicado sus vidas a seguir los pasos de Cristo.

Una de las metas del autor es mostrar a las religiosas como personas opuestas a los estereotipos (20).

Ella cree que cada una debería ser caracterizada individualmente en su revisión completa (7). Yo recomiendo este libro ampliamente en todo. A los no católicos en la dispersión y para Católicos Americanos ambos hombres y mujeres. Quienes gustarían de estar orgullosos del trabajo realizado. Ustedes pueden aprender mas sobre estas dinámica mujeres quienes hacen el trabajo que Cristo nos ha llamado a hacer y el Papa Francisco nos recuerda hacer.

Todas estas monjas trabajan en distintas áreas de asuntos de justicia incluyendo algunas como: Cabildeo en Justicia política para los mas pobres de los pobres en American, administrando una casa para victimas de trafico humano, asistando mujeres encarceladas y sus niños para recivir a la comunidad y acabar el ciclo de encarcelamiento integren racional, combatiendo por el estatus de las mujeres en la Iglesia, trabajando para combatir por los derechos por el LGBT-comunidad católica y la mas sonada y desgarradora historia sobre una religiosa quien sobrevivió de ser torturada y quien ahora trabaja con victimas de tortura para abiertamente compartir sus experiencias con el fin de desarrollar un proceso de sanación.

Algunas de las cosas que aprendí con la lectura de este libro …

Explorar tu llamado vocacional. Encontrar tu vocación altravez de la meditación con Dios la contemplación y vivirlo. Al recorrido del libro hay una lenguaje consistente entre las religiosas del deseo dentro de el servicio, un constante llamado de Dios, una sensación interior y luego hubo la confirmación. Una dijo: yo sabía que en mi había un deseo por asistir. Solo puedo explicarlo como que se volvió claro para mi. Yo tenia la sensación de poder hacer la diferencia (136).

Usa el regalo que tienes estando al servicio de los demás – La Hermana Simone Campbell menciono que sentía una mas profunda conexión con Dios cuando ella esta en presencia de personas a las que esta llamada a servir (58).

Orar – Cuando oramos no es que otras personas cambien, es que somos nosotros quienes cambiamos (136). La Hermana Joan Dawber sugirió meditar en oración contemplativa of implemente posarse en la presencia de Dios son cruciales en la vida del alma espiritualmente saludable.

Sueños imposibles sueños de justicia hagamos que se vuelvan realidad – (213) La hermana Joan Dawber quien se enfrente al trafico humano nos recuerda que, el pobre no siempre tiene que serlo económicamente. Los pobres pueden ser aquellos quienes han sufrido tremendas injusticias. El reino de Dios esta próximo a traer paz y justica a la gente (149).

Se un narrado de la verdad – poco a poco estas mujeres creen que ambiraran la sociedad y la iglesia pararon de creer en las viejas mentiras de tiempo atrás, y empezaron a vivir su propia verdad (248). Todas estas mujeres han mantenido el rumbo. La hermana Nora Nash nos recuerda que podemos mirar en las escrituras a entregar una base preciosa y promover el bien común, dignidad humana, derechos humanos sustentabilidad y sobre todo responsabilidad integral (164) para proteger y defender los derechos de aquellos que son vulnerables en nuestra sociedad.

Dios así ha intervenido en las vidas de estas mujeres cada minuto de todos días. Son capaces de vivir en el presente y abrasar cada momento. Después de leer este libro te exhorto a incorporar una estas cinco lecciones “o” una lección deferente que hubieras aprendido de este libro hacia tu vida diaria. Abre tu corazón en servicio a los demás y sentirás mas profundo el llamado al amor del evangelio (58). Sigue esforzándote por una transformación positiva en tu vida. Refleja algunos hábitos de estas religiosas. Y mira lo divino dentro de ti para hacer que esto suceda.

THE GENTRIFIED DOWNTOWN AND THE RONSTADT TRANSIT CENTER // HAY CAMBIOS EN EL CENTRO DE CAMIONES RONSTADT

I feel bad because I was stupid enough to allow a reporter to take my words out of context and misrepresent me (“Early Reactions to Ronstadt Plan Positive” Arizona Daily Star, 7/27/2015, http://tucson.com/news/blogs/road_runner/early-reactions-to-ronstadt-plan-positive/article_bd1028a0-55ff-5c75-828e-9ed345103ec4.html) I should have known better. I should have been more disciplined.

He quoted me to the effect that both plans were fine with me.

What I told him was that I would be most happy if both plans disappeared from the face of this earth because ultimately they both mean more gentrification (the process by which those with capital invest in lower income places, gradually making them more yuppie and white, while lower income folks get displaced).

I told him that largely because of the actions of the Tucson Bus Riders Union the City Council has declared that the transit footprint, the transit function, at the Ronstadt would not be reduced. So that became a bottom line for both development plans. I told him how we at the Bus Riders Union see this as a struggle to make it so that bus riders, many of which whom are low income, are not gentrified out of downtown.

I was also clear that the Peach plan was much more conscious of the needs of bus riders and that the Alexander plan seemed much more concerned with historic preservation. I told the reporter that making bus riders enter the center through turnstiles (the Alexander plan) was obnoxious and a mechanism for social control.

Bus riders have definitely been at the table, influencing this process and we plan to continue to do so.

You can’t always get what you want,

But if you try sometimes,

You just might find,

You get what you need! (a little bit of transit justice!)

HAY CAMBIOS EN EL CENTRO DE CAMIONES RONSTADT

Yo me siento mal porque mal porque fui un poco tonto cuando me entrevistó un periodista sobre este asunto. Su historia no conto mi comentario de una manera autentica. El manipuló mis palabras para que tuviera otro significado. Fue mi culpa. Hablé mucho con el.

Al contrario de lo que dijo en su historia, a mi no me gustan los dos planes que tienen para desarrollar Ronstadt. Ambos planes van hacer mas dinero para los gabachos ricos mientras que van a empujar a la gente mas pobre del downtown.

Expliqué al periodista sobre la lucha de la Union de los Pasajeros a mantener Ronstadt en su lugar ¡Los Políticos de la Ciudad de Tucson están de acuerdo! Vamos a continuar la lucha para quedarnos usando Ronstadt.

También fui muy claro que el plan de la compañía Peach fue mucho mejor para los pasajeros que el plan de la compañía Alexander. Pienso que el plan de Alexander es muy enfadoso porque va a tener solamente dos entradas muy estrechas. Es para tener mas control de los pasajeros .

Los pasajeros han luchado con mucha fuerza y efectividad en esta lucha y no nos vamos a dejar.

AN EIGHT DAY RETREAT // UN RETIRO DE OCHO DIAS

My Comrade Brian Flagg sent me on the second week of July 2015 to an eight day retreat in Los Altos Hills, California, a Jesuit Retreat Center. The retreat was based on spiritual exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola. The exercises are for prayer, reflection, and spiritual direction. I was able to attend this retreat after I became jealous when Brian went for the third time to this Jesuit retreat center. I had wanted to attend a good retreat myself. So Brian said I could attend the next year. And I did.

The Jesuit retreat center was a catholic haven for me. I did not expect it to be so catholic; since Brian had been there three times. What made it heavenly there was daily mass, two hours of adoration (being in the presence of God in the Eucharist) and along with outdoor locations with memorials and statues of saints, rosary mysteries and the Way of the Cross to pray and/or reflect with. I was in a religious heaven. I knew when I had to leave I would have an experience to remember.

At the start of my day I had a spiritual director (Naomi Meyer) and she would give me the message of the day with a scriptural meditation to reflect on throughout the day.

The retreat center has 38 acres of land where you have plenty of time for hiking and walking along paths on the hills. This is how I spent my time in silence and became close with Jesus and Mary.

The trail paths had places to sit. I would reflect, pray, read and write. the atmosphere is totally engulfed with nature that at times in my silence I could hear the wind speak to me with the birds singing and visits from Mother Nature’s rabbits and a deer.

During this time of discernment I became aware that I had to do some healing in my life. not just physical but also emotionally. By becoming a better listener in silence, I have learned to slow down and breathe more deeply and just live in the present.

I became aware each day how loved I am by God our Creator. My gratefulness more and more everyday by acknowledging all the gifts in my life with each message and scriptural meditations I received.

During my silence I was allowed by my spiritual director to read two books by the same author Richard Rohr. the first book titled Falling Upward and the second book title A Lever and a Place to Stand. These books gave me a better view of myself and society. So in this chaotic world that I live in the message of the retreat is BE STILL MY SOUL, I AM WITH YOU ALWAYS.

What I take from this retreat I now have a soul full of peace, tranquility and joy, for my heart it is ready to face the world with its new passion, strength, courage, and love for the world I live in.

UN RETIRO DE OCHO DÍAS

Fui a un retiro de silencio de 8 días este mes en Norte California. Brian me lo recomendó. Fue basado en los ejercicios espirituales de San Ignacio. Estaba celosa de Brain porque el asistió este retiro 3 veces antes que yo. !Este año me toco a mi!

El Centro de Retiro Jesuita fue muy católico. Hubo misa cada día, 2 horas de adoración, Santo Rosario, y viacrucis.

Al empezar el día hablaba con mi guía espiritual (Naomi Meyer) y ella me daba el mensaje del día con una cita bíblica para meditar durante el día.

El Centro de retiro tiene 38 acres y teníamos mucho tiempo libre para poder caminar alrededor. Así es como pase mi tiempo en silencio y llegue a estar mas cerca de Jesús y de Maria.

Las veredas por donde caminaba tenia bancas para sentarse, yo reflexionaba, oraba y escribía. La atmósfera estaba llena de la naturaleza y en mi tiempo de silencio podía escuchar el viento, el cantar de las aves y la visita de la madre naturaleza, conejos y venados.

Durante el tiempo de discernimiento, me di cuenta que hay cosas en mi vida que tengo que sanar, física y emocionalmente. Escuchando mas en el silencio, he aprendido a tener calma y respirar profundo y solo vivir el presente.

Estoy consciente cada día de cuanto dios me ama, mi gratitud creció mas y mas cada día cuando supe todos los regalos que el me a dado en mi vida con los mensajes y las meditaciones de las escrituras que recibía al comenzar el día.

Durante mi silencio tuve permiso de mi guía espiritual de leer dos libros del autor Richard Rohr. El primero fue Falling Upward y el segundo A Lever and a Place to Stand. estos dos libros me dieron una mejor manera de conocerme a mi misma y a la sociedad. Lo que aprendí de este retiro es a tener paz, tranquilidad, y gozo, ahora mi corazón esta listo para enfrentar al mundo con pasión fortaleza, coraje y amor.

LAURA ALAMEDA, LA CHICA MAS TRABAJADORA EN TODO EL MUNDO

I know of no one who would argue that.

Laura has lived and worked here at Casa Maria for the last 9 years, with her mom Librada, her grandpa the 94 year old comedian Antonio, and her youngest daughter Yanseli, the tennis star from Pima College.

She works fast. She works hard. She never complains and is liked by everyone.

She is 100% Mexicana and proud of it.

She also has a team of chicas whom are ready to cook anytime people come together to fight the forces of evil. Birria, barbacoa, fajitas, super nachos, hot dogs, big organic salads, you name it!

And she is my dance instructor I’m no longer 100% tontito (stupid) on the dance floor, only 85%! She has lots of patience!

Truly, she is la Gran Senora de Casa Maria! Laura is on vacation until August. The soup kitchen is significantly more difficult without her.

If anyone is thinking of coming here to help out, now would be a good time, every single morning from 8:30 to 11:30.

Laura trabaja muy rápido. Trabaja muy duro. Nunca se queja y todos la quieren y la respetan.

Ella tiene un equipo de chicas siempre listas para cocinar para la lucha contra las fuerzas del mal. Birria, barbacoa, fajitas, super nachos, hot dogs, ensaladas orgánicos, ¡lo que quieras!

También, ella es mi maestra de baile. ¡POBRECITA! Ella tiene mucha paciencia.

ACHIEVEMENT GAP WIDE BETWEEN WHITE AND MINORITY STUDENTS // BRECHA ANCHO ENTRE BLANCO Y ESTUDIANTES PERTENECIENTES A MINORÍAS

I have been an outspoken advocate against standardized testing mainly for this reason, among many others, and it can get very frustrating knowing these facts and not being able to do much about it as a parent.

For years the data has shown the educational disparity between anglo and minority students. In an educational system so obsessed with the collection and study of data how is it that these numbers are being ignored. I always see stories and articles written on this subject but very few are willing to speak to the solution rather than the problem.

A few weeks back I was sitting in the waiting area with other parents at the gym where my girls do gymnastics. There was a young mother sitting behind me with her two young boys. One was around 8 or 9 and the other was about preschool age. The preschooler was reading off a tablet while his older brother played games on his own. The Preschooler got stuck on a word and asked his mom for help. It sparked a discussion among them regarding vocabulary. The young child asked, “Mom, when I get as old as you will I have a big vocabulary and know more words than you?” The mother responded by saying, “well, first you’re going to have to go to college and get a Master’s degree like me.” The child then said, “What if I get a doctors degree like daddy, then will I be smarter than you?” The mother laughed and said, “It’s called a Doctorate degree, and yes, maybe you will.”

I was blown away by this conversation. Growing up I never knew what an Associate’s degree was, much less a Doctorate’s degree. I had no family members that went to college and only a small handful of cousins who graduated from high school. I remember hearing stories my mom would tell of how smart my dad is and how he was only a few credits away from graduating when he had to drop out to work full time to provide for me. Just making it to his senior year seemed to be a great achievement.

These are the experiences that shape a child’s future and ability to do well, or not, in our educational system. There is a direct tie between poverty and low achievement. And the majority of poor people happen to be minorities. This is no secret, the data has been ignored by politicians and policy makers for years.

In the Star’s article they mention this but speak very little about how to solve the problem. The article also mentions the disparity between Arizona students and other students across the nation. Arizona’s students test at the bottom ten on all subjects. This is directly tied to the high poverty rates and ridiculously low state funding to our public schools. Not only has Arizona cut more funding to public education this year, it also funds public schools less than any other state in the country.

We know the facts, but what do we do? Parent involvement is key. Districts and schools need to be able to meet students and parents where they are, financially and educationally, and provide the resources necessary for the students’ success. The way school funding is provided today is outdated. It insures that the students growing up in middle to upper-class households receive more funding to their neighborhood schools while schools in poor communities, which need more, receive less.

Passing bonds and overrides is one way to get more funding into our schools, but the only way to insure that the money gets to the students and schools that need it most is by getting, and staying, involved as parents. That’s how we put the PUBLIC back into public education.

He sido un defensor contra pruebas estandarizadas principalmente por este motivo, entre muchos otros, y puede ser muy frustrante conocer estos hechos y no poder hacer mucho al respecto como un padre.

Durante años los datos han mostrado la desigualdad educativa entre los estudiantes anglos y de la minoría. En un sistema educativo tan obsesionado con la colección y estudio de datos cómo es que estos números están siendo ignorados. Siempre veo historias y artículos escritos sobre este tema, pero muy pocos están dispuestos a hablar de la solución en lugar del problema.

Unas semanas atrás estaba sentado en la sala de espera con otros padres en el gimnasio donde mis hijas hacen gimnasia. Había una joven madre sentada detrás de mí con sus dos niños pequeños. Uno tenia 8 o 9 años y el otro de edad preescolar. El niño preescolar fue leyendo una tableta mientras que su hermano mayor jugaba juegos en su propia tableta. El niño se atoro en una palabra y pidió ayuda a su mamá. Suscitó una discusión entre ellos sobre vocabulario. El niño pregunto, “mamá, cuando sea tan grande como tu tendré un gran vocabulario y sabre más palabras que tú?” La madre respondió diciendo, “bueno, primero vas a tener que ir a la Universidad y conseguir un Master como yo.” Entonces el niño dijo: “Qué pasa si tengo un grado de doctores como papá, entonces seré más inteligente que usted?” La madre se rió y dijo, “se llama un doctorado, y sí, tal vez lo seras.

Fui sorprendido por esta conversación. Creciendo, yo nunca supe lo que un título de asociado era, mucho menos de un doctorado. No tuve miembros de la familia que fueran a la Universidad y sólo unos cuanto primos que se graduaron de la segundaría. Recuerdo historias de audiencia que mi mamá decía qué inteligente es mi papá y cómo fueron sólo unos pocos créditos de graduarse cuando tuvo que abandonar su educación para trabajar tiempo completo a proporcionar para mí. llegar a su último año de la segundaría parecía ser un gran logro.

Estas son las experiencias de un niño que dan forma al futuro y la capacidad para hacerlo bien, o no, en nuestro sistema educativo. Hay un lazo directo entre la pobreza y el bajo logro. Y la mayoría de las personas pobres son minorías. Esto no es ningún secreto, los datos han sido ignorados por los políticos y legisladores por años.

En el artículo de la estrella mencionan esto pero hablan muy poco acerca de cómo resolver el problema. Hi my name is Alicia Nuñez. I was born in Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico. I’ve lived in the United States for 22 years. I’m a single mother of a 14 year old daughter.

I belong to the Santa Cruz Church and I’m an active member of this parish as an extraordinary Eucharistic Minister. In addition, I’m a member of the Secular Order of Carmelite Descalces.

I’ve worked for Casa Maria since the July 1st, 2015. I like to help others and working for Casa Maria gives me the opportunity to do something good for those in need. In addition , I enjoy the Holy Mass every Monday as part of my life and work.

Hola mi nombre es Alicia Nuñez, naci en A.P., Sonora y vivo en los Estados Unidos hace 22 años. Soy madre soltera de una hija de 14 años.

Pertenezco a la iglesia Santa Cruz y soy miembro activo de esta parroquia como ministro de Eucaristía, y también pertenezco a la Orden del Carmelo Descalzo Seglar.

Richard Rohr helping me down the spiritual path … A reflection on his book A Lever and a Place to Stand

A year ago I was in the midst of a 30 day silent retreat at the Jesuit Retreat Center in Los Altos, CA. This week Barbi Urias from Casa Maria is going to do an 8 day silent retreat there.

One year later I’m still feeling like I’m on a path of being transformed, thanks be to God. Almost daily I still feel the love of Jesus I experienced there. I would hope that if anyone came down to Casa Maria and asked, my friends, comrades, and co-workers would say something like, “Oh yeah, he is significantly less worse, less obnoxious than he used to be.”

One thing that has definitely helped is this book by Richard Rohr.

I’ve got to confess that at times I’ve thought of Richard Rohr as kind of a lost in the clouds, comfortable, old white guy.

He is a Franciscan priest who founded the Center for Action and Contemplation in Albuquerque in 1987.

Reading this book has been full-blown inspiration, in part because he challenges the hell out of me!

He says this book is about his trying to show “that there is a deep relationship between the inner revolution of prayer and the transformation of social structures and social consciousness.”

One some level this is a manual for spiritual power and revolution, with the activism/social change based in contemplation. This is subversive and radical because it is trying to address the root, the underlying place where illusion and ego are generated.

Rohr’s experience is that activists tend to be in their heads, not their hearts and have big egos and opinions they can’t let go of. “I met so many wonderful social activists. I would agree with their conclusions and with their politics, but to be honest I was often disappointed in their actual energy, sometimes their goals and often their motivation. They seemed to be alienated, angry, and negative as the people on the other side of the argument, and I know that wasn’t going to get us anywhere.”

That is why he and others formed the Center to teach contemplative prayer to people working for social change.

He really nailed me when he talked about how “being driven” or working too hard and too intense lead to what has been called “the tyranny of the urgent,” where things are not done contemplatively or peacefully from within. Too much good work can become a violence to yourself and to those around you.

He also develops the notion that instead of trying to drive people into social change, a better approach might be to encounter Jesus and the process of being transformed can draw people more gently and effectively into change. You start to draw them instead of drive them.

At the same time, he heavily critiques capitalism, our church becoming the Church of the Empire after the year 300 and how we do lots of charity and how that charity has largely become an avoidance of a basic concern for justice.

Barbi is taking this book with her on her 8 day silent retreat. May it light a fire within her and anyone else who dares to check it out.

EL PADRE RICHARD ROHR ME HA AYUDADO EN EL CAMINO ESPIRITUAL

Un año atrás participe en un retiro de 30 días sin hablar en el Jesuit Retreat Center en San Francisco. Esta semana Barbi Urias de Casa Maria va a un retiro de 8 días sin hablar.

Un año después, todavía siento el amor de Jesus que experimenté esos 30 días. Todavía me siento lleno del Espíritu Santo, gracias a Dios. Pienso que mis comaradas, amigos, y los trabajadores de Casa Maria dirían “Si, el es much menos enfadoso que antes.”

Leyendo un libro del sacerdote Franciscan Richard Rohr me ha ayudado much en mis esfuerzos de cambiar a un hombre mas espiritual.

¡Este sacerdote me desafia mucho en este libro a un cambio positivo!

El tema mas importante en este libro es que hay una relación profunda entra la oración contemplativa y el cambio de nuestra sociedad enferma.

El dice que la revolución necesita estar basada en la oración profunda de las personas.

Hey un nivel de poder espiritual y revolución de cambio social en este libro; basado en la contemplación.

La experiencia de Padre Rohr es que el activismo esta en la cabeza, no en el corazón y tiene ego y opiniones que no se puedan dejar ir. El dice, “He conocido muchos activistas sociales muy buenos. Y he estado de acuerdo con sus conclusiones y políticas; pero para ser honesto muy a menudo estaba en desacuerdo con su energía negativa, que no nos llevaba a ningún lado.

I’m gonna celebrate by attending the 5:30 mass at Santa Cruz.

I’m gonna give thanks and praise that I’m part of a church who’s head guy, the Holy Father, Pope Francis, actually talks and acts like Jesus or one of the prophets!

Yesterday in Iowa, Bishop Richard Pates of Des Moines implored presidential candidates to “take up Pope Francis’ call for ‘profound political courage’ by focusing their campaigns as much on improving the environment and income inequality as they have on opposing gay marriage and abortion in past elections.”

Francis’ June encyclical “called for a ‘sweeping revolution’ to correct a ‘structurally perverse’ economic system that allows the rich to exploit the poor and has turned the Earth into an ‘immense pile of filth.'”

The article pointed out how Francis has urged church leaders to talk less about abortion and gay marriage and more about mercy and compassion…

Kinda like Jesus would do!

We, the Tucson Bus Riders Union, Won’t get fooled again!

In the middle of this recent attack on the transit budget orchestrated by the Mayor? the City Manager? and whomever else, I received an email from the renowned transit advocate Suzanne Schafer, entitled: “Where were we (and Karin Uhlich) on May 19?”

It read:

“That’s when the budget was presented and the cap was approved with the $2.4 million out of transit. Staff was not explicit about the route changes involved and senior transit officials were aghast that NO ONE ASKED. Basically they got direction from the City Manager’s office to not bring on a fuss but the BRU wasn’t there and Karin didn’t push back and make them explain HOW they were going to take that all out of transit.”

And I would add that none of our other usual allies on the Council said anything at the time or alerted us that something like this was in the works.

We and I somehow got it in our minds that in this, an election year, transit would not be attacked. We were clear that everyone had agreed that the Transit Envisioning Process would play out before changes to the system occurred.

We were wrong.

After we figured it out we went to Karin. Her meager attempts to restore the majority of the service cuts almost entirely failed. Only three of the proposed route cuts were undone.

Karin continues to talk very positive about how we are developing a vision of how to do transit better. But this is all illusion without the will to fight for the dollars necessary to make it happen. It’s all about the money!

The moral of the story? Ultimately, it’s our own fault, it’s my fault. We were not vigilant. We need to be better organized and not trust politicians. Or surface our own progressive candidates from among the ranks of the poor and working class and put them forward?

And I just got to invoke the words of Peter Townshend from The Who, “We Won’t Get Fooled Again!”

NO MAS SERAMOS ENGANADOS!
