LAST MINUTE ATTACK ON BUS RIDERS BY CITY STAFF, THE MAYOR AND COUNCILMAN KOZACHIK

The Bus Riders Union (BRU) requests your presence at the final budget hearing on:

Tuesday June 9 at 5:30 p.m. City Hall, 255 W. Alameda

Come and help us thwart the secretive, last minute $1.1 million worth of cuts to 9 bus routes. They are always being pressured to give everything to the cops.

After this public hearing the City will finalize this year’s budget.

Over this last year the Council has repeatedly voted to not take resources from transit. They have agreed that any significant changes to transit should come after the completion of the Transit Envisioning Process that is being implemented and funded by the City, the Pima Association of Governments (PAG) and other stakeholders including the Bus Riders Union.

Last night, as part of this process, the BRU convened 40 members for a spirited Transit Envisioning Workshop led by Liz Burden. The results will be sent to the City Council, PAG and lead project planner Jarrett Walker.

This is an election year. Don’t Steve Kozachik and the Mayor realize that the Democratic majority voters of Tucson support transit and continue to re-elect Council people who support transit?

Why do they continue to torment their colleagues on the Council by insisting that they balance their budget on the backs of mostly low income transit users? 5 of the 9 routes they want to cut are on the West side, in Ward 1, where Councilwoman Romero is running for re-election.

Please come witness this drama play out on Tuesday night – and don’t forget to wear your yellow Bus Riders Union shirts!

El Sindicato de Pasajeros del Camión (BRU) requiere de su presencia en la audiencia final del presupuesto él:

Venga y ayúdenos a frustrar el secreto recorte de 9 rutas y el $1.1 millones de dólares. Ellos siempre están siendo presionados a darle todo a los policías.

Después de esta audiencia pública la ciudad finalizara el presupuesto para este año.

Durante el pasado año, el Concilio repetidamente ha votado para que no se quiten recursos de transito. Ellos han estado de acuerdo en que cualquier cambio significativo al transporte debe venir después de la culminación del Proceso Visionario del Transporte el cual está siendo implementado y financiado por la ciudad, la Asociación de Gobiernos de Pima (PAG) y otros grupos interesados incluyendo el Sindicato de Pasajeros del Camión.

Anoche como parte de este proceso, el BRU reunió a 40 miembros para un Taller Visionario de Transporte dirigido por Liz Burden. Los resultados serán enviados a el Concilio de la Ciudad, PAG y al principal planificador del proyecto Jarrett Walker.

Este es un año electoral. ¿El Alcalde y Steve Kozachik , no se dan cuenta que la mayoría de los votantes Demócratas de Tucson apoyan el transporte y continúan re-eligiendo a personas al Concilio que apoyan al transporte?

¿Por qué ellos continúan atormentando a sus colegas en el Concilio, insistiendo en que balanceen el presupuesto en las espaldas de los usuarios, los que en su mayoría son pasajeros de bajos ingresos? 5 de las 9 rutas que quieren cortar están en el lado Oeste, en el Distrito 1, donde la Concejala Romero es candidata para su re-elección.

¡Por favor venga y sea testigo de cómo se desarrollara este drama la noche del martes – y no se olvide usar su playera amarilla del Sindicato de Pasajeros del Camión!

BERNIE SANDERS FOR PRESIDENT!

“There is something profoundly wrong” when so much of the nation’s income goes to the top 1 percent of all earners.

“This grotesque level of inequality is immoral.”

Bernie Sanders is the Vermont Senator who yesterday spoke these words to 5,000 supporters along the shore of Lake Champlain as he kicked off his presidential campaign (Star, May 27, 2015).

I liked how he said “now is not the time for thinking small” and that we need a revolution to transform our country economically, politically, socially and environmentally.

Most politicos are posturing or outright lying when saying things like this.

Not Bernie Sanders. For decades he has been on the front lines of the struggle for peace and justice. And he has always proudly proclaimed his belief in socialism.

Me gusta como él dijo “ahora no es el momento de pensar en pequeño,” y que necesitamos una revolución para transformar a nuestro país económica, política, social y ambientalmente.

La mayoría de los políticos solo están posando o de plano mintiendo cuando dicen cosas como estas.

No Bernie Sanders. Por décadas él ha estado al frente de lucha por la paz y la justicia. El siempre orgullosamente ha proclamado su creencia en el socialismo.

SORRY POPE FRANCIS, FOR WOMEN THERE IS STILL NO JUSTICE IN THE CHURCH

Yes I too have read the Joy of the Gospel and find it refreshing to hear Pope Francis implore us to live the Catholic Social teachings in our parishes and everyday lives. My parish in particular has even re written their mission statement to align more with Francis’ wishes for a more mission minded church. But as a Catholic woman I cannot look past the fact that even though these are monumental ideas that could make great changes in the church, there is still no justice for women here. As reported in the National Catholic Reporter in September of 2013, ‘Pope Francis with regard to the ordination of women, the church has spoken and says no- that door is closed.” THE DOOR IS CLOSED. I don’t know about you, but in my life denial isn’t joyful. Exclusion isn’t joyful. Closed doors, no discussion…there is no joy found here. Until there is room for everyone to participate fully in all aspects of the church, no matter how beautiful the thoughts and ideas may be, there is no justice here. Only more of the same.

My question is this, would the body of Christ be less any less sacred in the hands of women? Was not Mary, his mother, the first one to hold the broken body and blood of Christ? The first one to consecrate his body? Was his body less sacred in her hands? Why would Jesus be borne of a woman if God really thought women were unworthy in some way?

There are some that think social justice issues have no place in our church, that these issues are too radical. There are more important things, they say, like doctrine and tradition. There are many who considered Jesus too radical. They called him crazy because his friends were questionable. He ate and drank with sinners. He stood for justice even on the Sabbath. He appeared to Mary first, before any of the men were even awake. I don’t believe this same Jesus would then say women weren’t good enough to care for his broken body and blood in the Eucharist. I don’t believe he would offer women a place at his table before death but close the door to her afterwards.

I’m sorry Pope Francis, but until your door can be opened in some way there just isn’t and won’t ever be justice in your church. And if there is no justice there is no joy.

Si yo también he leído La Alegría del Evangelio y encuentro renovador el escuchar al Papa Francisco implorándonos a vivir las enseñanzas Sociales Católicas en nuestras Iglesias y en la vida diaria. Incluso en mi parroquia hemos vuelto a escribir la misión de nuestra iglesia para alinearla más con los deseos de Francisco, para tener una iglesia con una misión mas enfocada. Pero como mujer Católica, no puedo ver mas allá del hecho de que aunque estas son ideas monumentales que podrían lograr grandes cambios en la iglesia, aquí aun no hay justicia para las mujeres. Como se reporto en el National Catholic Reporter en Septiembre del 2013, “El Papa Francisco con respecto a la ordenación de mujeres, la iglesia ha hablado y dice que no – esa puerta está cerrada.” LA PUERTA ESTA CERRADA. Yo no sé ustedes, pero en mi vida la negación no es muy alegre. La excusión no es alegre. Las puertas cerradas, sin dialogo… no se puede encontrar nada de alegría aquí. Hasta que no haiga espacio para que todos participen plenamente en todos los aspectos de la iglesia, no importa cuán hermosos los pensamientos o las ideas sean, aquí no hay justicia. Solo más de lo mismo.

Mi pregunta es esta, ¿será el cuerpo de Cristo menos sagrado en manos de las mujeres?

¿No fue María, su madre, la primera en sostener el cuerpo quebrado y la sangre de Cristo? ¿La primera en consagrar su cuerpo? ¿Su cuerpo fue menos sagrado en sus manos? ¿Por qué Jesús nacería de una mujer si Dios en realidad pensara que las mujeres no eran dignas de alguna manera?

Hay algunos que piensan que los temas sobre la justicia social no tienen lugar en nuestra iglesia, de que estos temas son muy radicales. Ellos dicen que hay cosas más importantes, como las doctrinas y las tradiciones. Hay muchos que consideran a Jesús muy radical. Lo llamaban loco porque sus amigos eran cuestionables. El comía y bebía con pecadores. El luchaba por justicia aun en el día de descanso. El se le apareció primero a María antes que cualquier de los hombres se despertara. No creo que este mismo Jesús diría que las mujeres no eran suficientemente buenas para cuidar a su cuerpo lastimado y su sangre en la Eucaristía. Yo no creo que el ofrecería un lugar en la mesa a las mujeres antes de su muerte, pero se las cerraría después.

Lo siento Papa Francisco, pero hasta que tu puerta no esté abierta de cierta manera, simplemente no hay justicia en tu iglesia. Y si no hay justicia no hay alegría.

EDUCATION FUNDING HELD HOSTAGE BY GOVERNOR

Last week Governor Ducey spoke to some of the state’s highest ranking business groups: Greater Phoenix Leadership, the Flagstaff Forty and the Southern Arizona Leadership Council. This probably doesn’t surprise you, but Ducey’s threat to the group might.

He made it very clear that if any of the business groups tried practicing their constitutional right of pursuing a ballot initiative to increase education funding that he, and the dark money backing him, would fight them vigorously. In 2012 there was a ballot initiative, prop 204, which would have extended the one cent sales tax passed in 2010 and would have allocated the taxes collected to education. It lost by 64.3%, largely because of the dark money that flooded Arizona to ensure its failure. Over $1 million dollars were spent by the Koch brothers alone to deceptively crush prop 204.

These are the same dark money funders that funded Ducey’s campaign and election. These mega-rich billionaires are hell bent on destroying the future of impoverished Arizonans for their own gain.

Though we may not always see eye to eye, when it comes to education the local business community understands the importance of a high quality education for a strong economy and a well-educated work force.

Maybe it’s time we work together to take control of our tax dollars to ensure a better education and future for Arizona’s children. Today district overrides and propositions to increase education funding are needed more than ever before to ensure the future of our state’s economy and most importantly the future of our youth and the generations to come.

La semana pasada el gobernador Ducey hablo con algunos grupos de negocios de alto rango en el estado: Greater Phoenix Leadership, Flagstaff Forty and the Southern Arizona Leadership Council. Esto probablemente no lo sorprenda, pero la amenaza que les hizo Ducey tal vez sí.

El claramente les informo que si cualquiera de ellos trataran de practicar sus derechos constitucionales de intentar poner una propuesta en la boleta electoral para incrementar el financiamiento para la educación, él y el dinero oscuro que lo apoya, lucharan vigorosamente en contra de ellos. Los líderes de los negocios que estuvieron presentes se sintieron muy amenazados por esto.

En el 2012 hubo una propuesta electoral, proposición 204, la cual hubiera extendido el impuesto de 1 centavo que se aprobó en el 2010 y hubiera dirigido los impuestos obtenidos hacia la educación. Se perdió por un 64.3%, en gran parte porque el dinero oscuro inundo a Arizona para asegurar su fracaso. Más de $1 millón de dólares fueron gastados solo por los hermanos Koch para aplastar engañosamente la proposición 204.

Estos financiadores son los mismos del dinero oscuro que financiaron la campaña electoral de Ducey. Estos mega-ricos billonarios están empeñados en destrozar el futuro de una Arizona empobrecida para su propio beneficio.

Aunque no siempre estamos en la misma página, cuando se trata de la educación, la comunidad de negocios locales entiende la importancia de una educación de calidad para que haiga una fuerte economía y una fuerza laboral bien educada.

Tal vez es tiempo de trabajar juntos para tener control del dinero de nuestros impuestos y asegurar una mejor educación y un mejor futuro para los niños de Arizona. Hoy en día las propuestas de ley e incrementos en impuestos por el distrito escolar, para incrementar el financiamiento son más necesarias que nunca para proteger el futuro económico de nuestro estado y más importante aun el futuro de nuestros jóvenes y las futuras generaciones.

MY DAUGHTER ALISSA’S NEW HERO

A few months back I remember my daughter Alissa coming to me with much excitement to tell me about a remarkable woman they were studying in history. She was fascinated by the strong will of this female role model and all of the accomplishments achieved by her in spite of her disabilities. I too remember studying the life of Helen Keller when I was in school and was inspired to do some more research in order to have deeper conversations with my daughter on the subject. What I found was a great surprise.

Like most history taught in school Helen Keller’s life and legacy had been filtered, only teaching our youth the bits and pieces that are “acceptable” to the American point of view. Helen Keller was much more than just an extraordinary woman who overcame the crippling disabilities of deafness and blindness to lead a full life. She was a true, outspoken anti-capitalist who believed charity was not the answer. A revolutionary!

“So long as I confine my activities to social service and the blind, they compliment me extravagantly, calling me ‘arch priestess of the sightless,’ ‘wonder woman,’ and a ‘modern miracle.’ But when it comes to a discussion of poverty, and I maintain that it is the result of wrong economics—that the industrial system under which we live is at the root of much of the physical deafness and blindness in the world—that is a different matter! It is laudable to give aid to the handicapped. Superficial charities make smooth the way of the prosperous; but to advocate that all human beings should have leisure and comfort, the decencies and refinements of life, is a Utopian dream, and one who seriously contemplates its realization indeed must be deaf, dumb, and blind.”

—Helen Keller (letter to Senator Robert La Follette, 1924)

Though blind, Helen clearly saw the connection between poverty and the root causes of deafness and blindness. She saw the connection between poverty and the suffering of the masses while the elite profit from that suffering. She understood that poverty was not necessary and it was a product of our industrialist/capitalist system where profit is valued more than human life. She was criticized by many for this, and whether or not we agree with her points of view, this is also part of her legacy that should be discussed critically in our history’s text.

Hace unos cuantos meses recuerdo que mi hija Alissa vino con mucho entusiasmo a contarme sobre una maravillosa mujer, a la que estaban estudiando en su clase de historia. Ella estaba fascinada por la fuerza de voluntad de este ejemplo de mujer y por todos sus los logros a pesar de sus discapacidades. Yo también recuerdo haber estudiado la vida de Helen Keller cuando estaba en la escuela, esto me inspiro aun más a investigar para poder tener una conversación más profunda con mi hija. Lo que encontré fue una gran sorpresa.

Al igual que la mayoría de la historia que se enseña en la escuela la vida y el legado de Helen Keller había sido filtrado, enseñando a los jóvenes solo partes que son “aceptables” según el punto de vista de los americanos. Helen Keller fue mucho más que una extraordinaria mujer la cual venció las discapacidades paralizantes de la sordera y ceguera para poder tener una vida plena. Ella fue una franca anticapitalista la cual decía que la caridad no es la solución. ¡Una revolucionaria!

“Mientras me limito a mis actividades en el servicio social y a los ciegos, ellos me complementan extravagantemente, llamándome ‘sacerdotisa de los ciegos’ ’mujer maravilla’ y un ‘milagro moderno.’ ¡Pero cuando se trata de dialogar sobre la pobreza, yo mantengo que es el resultado de una economía equivocada-que el sistema industrial bajo el cual vivimos es la raíz de la mayoría de la sordera y ceguera en el mundo- eso es algo diferente! Es loable dar ayuda a los discapacitados. Las caridades superficiales suavizan el camino de la prosperidad; pero el abogar que todos los seres humanos deben tener confort y tiempo libre, las decencias y refinamientos de la vida, es un sueño Utópico, y uno que seriamente contempla su realización debe ser sorda, tonta, y ciega.”

Aunque ciega, Helen claramente vio la conexión entre la pobreza y las verdaderas causas de la sordera y la ceguedad. Ella vio la conexión entre la pobreza y el sufrimiento de las masas mientras que la elite ganaba de ese sufrimiento. Ella entendió que la pobreza no era necesaria y que era el producto de nuestro sistema industrial/capitalista donde las ganancias se valoran más que la vida humana. Ella fue criticada por muchos, y ya sea que estemos de acuerdo o no con sus puntos de vista ella o no, esto también es parte de su legado el cual debe ser dialogado críticamente en los textos de historia.

TREO EXPLOITING WORKERS ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BORDER?

So, TREO (Tucson Regional Economic Opportunities) has now changed its name to Sun Corridor Inc.? (Page 1 Star May, 20, 2015).

Seems to me like an admission that they are acknowledging that they are largely useless and mostly incompetent and making a change in their brand name is something that makes them a bit more relevant?

I do admit that Joe Snell, president and CEO of TREO is competent in pimping himself a salary of hundreds of thousands of dollars and getting a brand new office on East River Road.

Joe and TREO insist that the name change is about them expanding their focus across Southern Arizona and into Mexico.

He says that Mexico’s growing economic power needs to be used to optimize this region’s strength as a transportation and logistics hub.

He and his TREO buddies talk about this as ‘opportunity’ for the whole region.

It’s really about greater opportunity for the rich to further exploit poor and working people on both sides of the border.

If you go look for a job today in Nogales, Sonora, how much do you think that job will pay you?

The reality of life in Mexico for its workers was actually in the Daily Star on May 16 when it reported that:

“Mexican farmworkers fighting low wages and poor working conditions in the border state of Baja California have reached an agreement with the government and their employers.”

“Daily wages will go from 100 pesos to 200 pesos ($13 a day/ $1.62 an hour-based on an 8 hr. day), workers will be added to the social security system and they will be allowed to unionize, according to a statement issued by Mexico’s Interior Ministry.”

“The measures were among 13 agreements signed Thursday that also require companies to be certified that they don’t use child labor and to identify and improve worker’s housing, food, and health and safety conditions.”

The Mexican workers won a victory and NOW THEY WORK FOR $13 A DAY!

Message to Joe Snell and all his wealthy buddies:

This is immoral. Some day those responsible for this sin will have to pay up.

Así que TREO (Oportunidades Económicas Regionales de Tucson) ahora ¿ha cambiado su nombre al Corredor del Sol Inc.? (1 pagina Star, Mayo 20, 2015).

Esto me parece una admisión de que ellos están reconociendo que son en gran medida inútiles e incompetentes, ¿y el cambiar su nombre de marca es algo que los hace un poquito más relevantes?

Yo admito que Joe Snell, presidente y CEO de TREO es competente en el proxenetismo al conseguirse un salario de cientos de miles de dólares y en obtener una nueva oficina en el Este de la River Road.

Joe y TREO insisten en que el cambio de nombre se trata sobre la expansión en su enfoque hacia el Sur de Arizona y en México.

El dice que en México el poder económico está creciendo, y que se debe usar para optimizar su fuerza en el transporte y como centro logístico en la región.

El y sus amigos de TREO hablan sobre esto como una ‘oportunidad’ para toda la región.

En realidad se trata de una gran oportunidad para los que los ricos exploten aun más a los pobres y la los trabajadores en ambos lados de la frontera.

¿Si hoy vas a buscar un trabajo en Nogales, Sonora, cuánto crees que te pagaran por este trabajo?

La realidad de la vida de los trabajadores en México fue reportada el 16 de Mayo en el Daily Star, cuando reportó que:

“Los trabajadores agrícolas que luchan en contra de los salarios bajos y pobres condiciones de trabajo en el estado fronterizo de Baja California, han logrado un acuerdo con el gobierno y sus empleadores.”

“Los salarios diarios irán desde 100 pesos hasta los 200 pesos ($13 dólares al día/ $1.6 la hora), a los trabajadores se les agregara al sistema de seguro social y se les permitirá ser parte de un sindicato, según lo dicho por el Ministerio del Interior de México.”

“Estas medidas fueron parte de los 13 acuerdos firmados el jueves, que también requieren que las compañías sean certificadas de que no están utilizando a menores en el trabajo, y que se mejore la vivienda, los alimentos, y las condiciones de salud y seguridad.”

Los trabajadores Mexicanos salieron victoriosos y ¡AHORA TRABAJAN POR $13 DOLARES AL DIA!

Un mensaje para Joe Snell y sus amigos ricos:

Eso es inmoral. Algún día aquellos responsables por este pecado tendrán que pagar.

ONE COUNCILMANS QUEST TO PUNISH TRANSIT AND ENRICH DOWNTOWN DEVELOPERS

Shame on Councilman Kozachik for trying once again to balance the budget on the backs of the poor!

According to him the City of Tucson should prioritize and move in the right direction, by increasing bus fares and cutting services.

In his last newsletter dated May 11, 2015 he wrote: “We have to take a serious look and simply stop doing that which is beyond our core responsibility (but transit is one of his core responsibilities!) If we added a 10% fare increase to the base fare, we’d add another $730K in revenues that would go to help protect our General Fund and our reserve funds”.

Why is it that every year there are always a few who have to pick on transit? According to Councilwoman Karin Uhlich, during the budget conversations, “horrible numbers are put in front of the council every year (often out of context with shifting frames of reference).” She also reminds us that “It’s important to recognize that the Streetcar is the primary cause of the added costs to the system. Capital costs are the other key cost increase.”

It is obvious that Councilman Kozachik does not take the bus, and he doesn’t understand the reality of bus riders. Increasing bus fares or cutting services would be devastating to poor families in Tucson. It is all about priorities, providing quality services, increasing ridership and protecting the environment by getting people of their cars and into the bus.

One could ask what councilman Kozachik priorities are, and what does moving in the right direction mean to him? I am sure it has nothing to do with making life easier for Tucson’s poor.

Here is where the money is: According to Becky Pallack from the Daily Star (May 17, 2015) the City Council will give approximately $20.4 million worth of incentives/ taxpayer giveaways to developers to continue three “downtown revival” (gentrification) projects: the renovation of the Chase Bank building annex, the renovation of the Arizona Hotel, and the Rialto Block redevelopment.

I personally agree with Councilwoman Uhlich that “the best way to raise revenues will continue to be increasing ridership, not raising fares (which would lead to decreased ridership).”

It is obvious that the money is there!

¡Es una vergüenza que el Concejal Kozachik una vez más trate de balancear el presupuesto en las espaldas de los pobres!

Según él, la Ciudad de Tucson debería priorizar e ir en la dirección correcta, incrementando las tarifas de los camiones y recortando los servicios.

En su último diario con fecha del 11 de Mayo del 1015, el escribió: “Tenemos que ver seriamente y simplemente parar de hacer lo que está más allá de nuestras principales responsabilidades (¡pero el transporte es una de sus principales responsabilidades!) Si aumentamos en un 10% la tarifa bases, aumentaríamos otros $750 mil dólares en ganancias las que ayudarían a proteger a nuestro Fondo General y nuestras reservas”.

¿Por qué es que cada año siempre hay unos cuantos que tartán de meterse con el transporte? Según la Concejal Karin Uhlich, durante las conversaciones sobre el presupuesto, “a los concejales se les presentan números terribles cada año (muy seguido, fuera de contexto y cambiando los enfoques de referencia). Ella también nos recuerda que “es importante reconocer que el tranvía es la principal causa por la cual el sistema es más costoso. Los costos capitales también son la otra clave del incremento.”

Es obvio que el Concejal Kozachik no usa el camión, y que él no entiende la realidad de los pasajeros. El incrementar las tarifas o recortar el servicio sería devastador para las familias pobres en Tucson. Todo se trata de prioridades, de proporcionar un servicio de calidad, incrementar el número de pasajeros y proteger el medio ambiente al sacar a las personas de sus vehículos y hacer que usen el camión.

Uno se podría preguntar ¿cuáles son las prioridades del concejal Kozachik, y que significa para él ir en la dirección correcta? Estoy seguro que no tiene nada que ver con tratar de hacerles la vida más fácil a los pobres en Tucson.

Yo estoy de acuerdo con al Concejal Uhlich de que “la mejor manera de incrementar las ganancias continua siendo incrementando el número de pasajeros, y no incrementando las tarifas (lo cual conduce a que baje el número de pasajeros).

¡Es obvio de que el dinero esta allí!

A LESS THAN COMFORTABLE JESUIT NOVICE COMES TO TUCSON!

I’m a Jesuit novice (aka Catholic priest-in-training), and I’m traveling on my “pilgrimage” right now, which has led me to Casa Maria! The Jesuits send us out one-by-one with $35 and a one-way bus ticket, and tell us to come back in a month. The pilgrimage is all about really developing our trust in God, and one of the greatest gifts for me has been the people I have met along the way. The people here at Casa Maria have welcomed me on my journey, and they have also really challenged me.

My few days here at Casa Maria has gone by in the blink of an eye, it seems. Yet I feel a strong call from God to respond to the experiences and inspirations I’ve had in just this short time. The desert is completely new territory to me, but being here at Casa Maria has made a big impact on me.

In just a few short days here, I have seen the hospitality of Casa Maria both towards me and the people in this community. But it’s not just about a passive or hands-off feeling of “doing good.” Casa Maria has challenged me to be active on a local level, to be informed, and to work with and empower the people around me. I cannot just sit back and be disinterested about things happening in my community. It is my responsibility as a Christian to apply the messages of Jesus and Casa Maria’s other hero, Pope Francis, to my own local circumstances. I must continue to ask myself, how am I putting my faith into action with the people around me?

This question challenges me, because it really reminds me of my own journey to entering formation for the Jesuits. When I received my first inspiration from God to become a priest, it was all about responding to the call of Jesus to “come, follow me.” When I first really considered that invitation from Jesus, I was drawn to the priesthood and to a radical response of devoting my life to Christ. Now, as I continue my path with the Jesuits, I must further discern how Jesus is inviting me to respond to his call.

Following Jesus for me, and I think for Casa Maria, does not mean just sitting back and being comfortable. Jesus challenged the attitudes of his time, he was unashamedly among all kinds of people, and he risked and even sacrificed his own life to carry out the mission for which he was sent by God. I want to take this inspiration from Jesus and Casa Maria, and allow it to form me as I work toward priesthood with the Jesuits. I hope you are challenged by Jesus, and maybe also by these amazing people at Casa Maria, to be courageous in responding to Jesus’ call to “follow me” in your own life and circumstances. ¡Gracias a Casa María y gracias a Dios para esta inspiración!

¡Yo soy un Jesuita novato (sacerdote Católico en entrenamiento), y estoy viajando en mi “peregrinaje” ahora mismo, el cual me ha traído hasta aquí a Casa María! Los Jesuitas nos envían uno a uno con $35 dólares y un boleto de camión, y nos dicen que regresemos en un mes. El peregrinaje es para poder desarrollar nuestra confianza en Dios, y uno de los regalos más grandes para mí han sido las personas que he conocido en el camino. Las personas de Casa María me han dado la bienvenida en mi viaje, y también me han retado.

Mis pocos días aquí en Casa María parecen haber pasado en un abrir y cerrar de ojos. Sin embargo, siento un fuerte llamado de Dios en responder a las experiencias e inspiraciones que he tenido en este poco tiempo. El desierto es un territorio completamente nuevo para mí, pero estando aquí en Casa María ha tenido un gran impacto en mí.

En unos cuantos días aquí, he visto la hospitalidad de Casa María hacia mí y hacia las personas en esta comunidad. Pero no se trata solo de un sentimiento pasivo de “hacer el bien”. Casa María me ha retado a estar activo a nivel local, estar informado, a trabajar y dar poder a las personas a mí alrededor. No puedo estar sentado ni desinteresado sobre las cosas que están pasando en mi comunidad. Es mi responsabilidad como cristiano aplicar el mensaje de Jesús y del otro héroe de Casa María, el Papa Francisco, a mi propia situación local. Debo continuar preguntándome, ¿cómo estoy poniendo mi fe en acción con las personas a mí alrededor?

Esta pregunta es un reto, porque en realidad me recuerda a mi propio viaje para entrar a la formación Jesuita. Cuando recibí mi primera inspiración de Dios para ser un padre, todo era sobre responder al llamado de Jesús de “ven, sígueme.” Cuando por primera vez en realidad considere la invitación de Jesús, me sentí atraído por el sacerdocio y a una respuesta radical de dedicar mi vida a Cristo. Ahora, mientras continuo mi camino con los Jesuitas, debo de discernir como es que Jesús me está invitando a responder a su llamado.

Para mí, y creo que para Casa María, el seguir a Jesús no significa el estar sentado y cómodo. Jesús reto las actitudes de su tiempo, el estuvo sin ninguna vergüenza entre toda clase de personas, y arriesgó e incluso sacrificó su propia vida para llevar a cabo a misión por al cual fue enviado por Dios. Quiero tomar esta inspiración de Jesús y Casa María, y permitir que me forme mientras trabajo en mi sacerdocio con los Jesuitas. Espero que todos sean retados por Jesús, y tal vez también por estas increíbles personas de Casa María, a ser valientes y responder al llamado de Jesús de “síganme”, en sus propias vidas y circunstancias.

POPE FRANCIS ON CLIMATE CHANGE

We here at Casa Maria are eagerly anticipating the Holy Father’s upcoming encyclical on environmental issues such as climate change.

Pope Francis said recently that it was practically finished but needed only to be translated into various languages before it could be published.

Hopefully it will read something like this cartoon from the National Catholic Reporter (May 8, 2015).

And I bet that if the Holy Father lived in Tucson he would greatly appreciate the Tony Davis articles in the Daily Star on Sunday, May 10^th and Monday, May 11^th. In these stories Tony demonstrates how huge moneyed interests subvert public process in their pursuit of short term profits at the expense of our beautiful Sonoran desert.

The gist of it was that a top U.S. Bureau of Land Management official in Arizona said at a 2013 press conference that “a lot of progress” was being made to address the agency’s concerns about the proposed Rosemont Mine.

But at the same time, memos obtained by the Arizona Daily Star show, his staff wrote a half-dozen memos and emails raising serious concerns about potential environmental damage from the mine.

El PAPA FRANCISCO Y LOS CAMBIOS CLIMATICOS

Nosotros aquí en Casa María estamos esperando con impaciencia la encíclica de Santo Padre sobre temas del medio ambiente tales como el cambio climático.

El Papa Francisco dijo recientemente que prácticamente ya está listo, pero solo se necesita que sea traducido en varios idiomas antes de poder ser publicado.

Con suerte se leerá algo parecido a esta caricatura del National Catholic Reporter (Mayo 8, 2015).

Yo puedo apostar que si el Santo Padre viviera en Tucson, el apreciaría los artículos escritos por Tony Davis en el diario del domingo 10 de mayo y el lunes 11. En estas historias Tony demuestra cómo es que los enormes intereses monetarios sobrepasan los procesos públicos en búsqueda de ganancias a corto plazo a costa de nuestro hermoso desierto de Sonora.

La esencia de esto es, que un alto oficial de la Oficina de Administración de Tierras de los EEUU, dijo en una conferencia de prensa en el 2013 que “bastante progreso” se ha hecho para solucionar las preocupaciones de la agencia en cuanto a la propuesta de la Mina Rosemont.

Pero a la vez, memorándums obtenidos por el diario Arizona Daily Star, muestran que sus empleados escribieron media docena de memorándums y correos electrónicos levantando serias preocupaciones sobre daños que podrían causar la mina.
